HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The University of Mobile Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field teams returned to the state of Mississippi for the second-straight week on Friday and Saturday, Mar. 31 - Apr. 1, competing in yet another weekend meet hosted by an NCAA D-I institution. The Rams competed in the Bulldog Relays last week hosted by Mississippi State University, and traveled to Hattiesburg, Miss. this weekend for a meet at Southern Miss University.
In the weekend long meet, Mobile saw another school record broken and more qualifying times recorded. However, no new qualifying marks were hit at the Southern Miss Invitational.
Reigning NAIA Track Athlete of the Week Continues Strong 2023 Season as Another Ram Notches School Record
In the women's events on the weekend, Latavia Jack once again recorded a qualifying mark in the 200 meters event, placing second overall with a time of 24.74 seconds. Jack was named NAIA National and SSAC Conference Women's Track Athlete of the Week last week after qualifying for NAIA Nationals in three separate events at the Bulldog Relays.
Jack will compete in the 2023 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships in the 100 meters, 200 meters, and 4x100 meter relay events. Currently, the sophomore Lake Charles, La. native is the lone Ram to qualify for three events.
On the men's side, Wes Egalite highlighted the men's team by recording a school record over the weekend. Egalite has been behind several school records this season across both the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons and continued that trend on Saturday. Egalite's school record came in the 110 meter hurdles event where the freshman tallied a third-place finish with a time of 14.87 seconds. Last week in the Bulldog Relays, Egalite recorded a time of 14.97 seconds in the same event which at the time was a new program best.
Both Egalite and Jack will be up for the SSAC Men's and Women's Track Athlete of the Week Awards set to be released on Tuesday, Apr. 4.
Anna Cabrera Finds Success in Central Florida
In addition to the Southern Miss Invitational, Anna Cabrera of the UM Women's Outdoor Track and Field team traveled to Daytona Beach, Fla. over the weekend and competed at the Embry-Riddle Spikes Classic 2023. Cabrera managed to qualify for the heptathlon event at the meet, tallying 4699 points in the process.
Her qualification in the heptathlon is the second event this season that the senior has qualified for NAIA Nationals in, joining her mark in the women's 100 meter hurdles event earlier in the year.
