Mobile's Big Third Set Comeback Leads Rams to Fifth-Straight Sweep

Rams Sweep Conference Foe Loyola on Tuesday in Pharr Gymnasium

MOBILE, Ala. - In what was a highly anticipated match on Tuesday night, Sept. 13, the University of Mobile Volleyball team came away with a straight-set sweep over conference opponent Loyola University of New Orleans in front of a large and loud Pharr Gymnasium crowd. The win for the Rams on Tuesday is the team's fifth-straight victory, while also being the fifth-straight sweep. On the season, 10 of Mobile's 11 victories came in the form of 3-0 sweeps. Mobile advanced their overall record 11-4, while remaining unbeaten in SSAC action at 3-0.

Rams Tame Wolf Pack

In set one, it was all Mobile as the Rams came away with a 25-16 victory to start the night. Loyola managed to take an early lead in set two, but Mobile as a whole played outstanding on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball, eventually taking the lead and defeating Loyola in the second set, 25-22.

Set three became the most exciting set of the match on Tuesday night as Loyola managed to start hot, keeping the Rams in check for most of the set. After Mobile Head Coach Jon Campbell was forced to burn both of his timeouts early in the set, Loyola had an eight-point cushion at 20-12 and took the crowd out of the match.

With Aspen Adams serving, Mobile managed to put together a run, eventually erasing the eight-point deficit and tying the match at 20 points a piece. After each point Mobile scored, the crowd in Pharr Gymnasium only grew louder and louder. Loyola, who at one point looked destined to force a fourth set, called both of their timeouts late in an attempt to halt Mobile's momentum and quiet the fans. However, the timeouts proved unhelpful for the Wolf Pack as the Rams mounted an impressive comeback to claim set three 25-22 and win the match in three sets. At the end of set three, Mobile put together a 13-2 run to stay undefeated in conference play and extend the current winning streak to five matches.

Inside the Box Score

Offensively, the Rams recorded one of their better offensive matches with a .299 hitting percentage in the match. Mobile hit a stellar .441 in set one alone, and followed with a .282 hitting mark in set two. After a slow start in set three, Mobile finished strong on the offensive side to come back late. The slow start hurt the hitting percentage a tad as Mobile finished the set with a .205 hitting percentage. Entering Tuesday's match, the Rams had a team hitting percentage of .203 on the season. That total has improved to .209 following the win.

Freshman Corrina Porch-Maxey led Mobile with 10 kills in the match, while hitting .240. Porch-Maxey is coming off a match where she was displeased with her performance, but was the first to show up to Pharr Gymnasium on Tuesday, ready to face Loyola and redeem herself. She made just four attack errors in 25 attempts Tuesday night.

Jordan Wood put together another fantastic offensive night, finishing with nine kills and leading Mobile with a .421 hitting mark. Following Tuesday's win, Wood increases her season totals to 102 total kills across 14 matches played and a hitting line at .374, best on the team.

Sophomore Layton Adams filled up the box sheet on Tuesday, tallying eight kills, 17 assists, and 13 defensive digs. Her kills and digs totals were good for third-best on the team, while she finished second on the team in the assist category behind Tatum Beech who led Mobile with 20.

Abby Andrews led the Rams with 18 digs on the night, while libero Lexi Gillette recorded 14.

On the Road Again

With the Rams riding a five-match win streak, Mobile will make the trip north to Montgomery, Ala. on Thursday, Sept. 15 in hopes of defeating conference opponent Faulkner University. The Rams have won the last four meetings against the Eagles, and will look to stay perfect in conference play with a win.

Thursday's match in Montgomery is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. CT and will be broadcasted live at https://www.youtube.com/FaulknerSportsNetwork.
