WEST POINT, Ga. - The University of Mobile Women's Soccer team traveled to West Point, Ga. on Thursday, Sept. 8 for the first-ever meeting in women's soccer with the Point University Skyhawks. Mobile is coming off a 7-1 blowout victory over Brenau University earlier in the week, and continued their strong offensive surge with a 5-2 win over Point on Thursday, giving the Rams 12 total goals scored in the last two matches played. The win over Point advances Mobile's overall record to 3-2-1 on the season, putting them over the .500 win percentage mark for the first time during the 2022 season.
Mobile 5, Point 2
After a scoreless first 20 minutes on Thursday night, it was Mobile who hit the scoreboard first in the 21st minute. Carolina Martins Gomes connected with the back of the net for her second goal of the season following a pass from Nana Sofie Kumai Bjerre, who was awarded the assist. Just under 15 minutes later, the Rams added on following a goal from Sophie Roberts. Roberts is coming off a match where she scored four goals and tallied two assists in the victory over Brenau on Monday.
After allowing a last-minute goal in the first half to Point, Mobile took a 2-1 lead to halftime. Both Martins Gomes and Roberts were not finished on the night, as Roberts managed to score her second goal of the night and her sixth goal in back-to-back matches. Roberts' second goal came in the 71st minute. After being responsible for six of Mobile's 12 goals this week, Roberts is currently the favorite to claim the SSAC Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week honor with still one match remaining on the week.
For Martins Gomes, she tallied her second goal of the night just seven minutes later, giving her three total on the season. Official scoring initially ruled Martins Gomes' second goal as an own goal against the Skyhawks, but video review after the match forced the scoring to credit Martins Gomes with the goal.
In the 85th minute, Point managed to cut Mobile's 4-1 deficit in half with a goal, but Bailey Bronner of Mobile answered with the exclamation point in the 90th minute to give the Rams the 5-2 victory. Bronner's goal is her second on the season and second in back-to-back matches. Raegan Latiolais was given the assist on Mobile's fifth and final goal.
