University of Mobile Volleyball Rallies with Two Victories on Friday to Advance to SSAC Championship Match

Rams Headed Back to Title Match in SSAC Following Strong Showing on Friday

MULTIPLEX AT CRAMTON BOWL | MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The University of Mobile Volleyball team ended the seasons of two higher seeds in the SSAC Volleyball Championship Tournament on Friday, Nov. 10, defeating the fourth-seeded Skyhawks of Point University (Ga.) to open the day and later upsetting the No. 2 seed of Loyola University (La.) in the semifinals. Mobile's strong performances on Friday advances the fifth-seeded Rams to the championship match in the SSAC, where they will face Blue Mountain Christian (Miss.) in a championship rematch from one year ago. The two wins on Friday advances the overall record for Mobile to 20-10, while improving to 3-1 in the postseason.

Additionally, Mobile has qualified for the 2023 NAIA Volleyball National Championship Tournament with the semifinal victory on Friday as the SSAC receives two bids to the final two teams of the conference tournament. 

Day Two Results / Highlights
  • The Rams opened Friday with a four-set win over Point to advance to the semifinals, defeating the Skyhawks, 25-18, 25-17, 23-25, 25-21.
  • Mobile's win to open Friday's schedule propelled the Rams to another four-set win later that evening, defeating Loyola in the semis, 29-27, 18-25, 25-21, 25-21.
  • Mobile tallied a .239 attack percentage against Point, while hitting .215 in the nightcap. 
  • Layton Adams recorded triple-doubles in both victories, ending her day with 30 total kills, 53 assists, and 35 defensive digs.
  • Adams recorded a stat line of 16 ks / 28 asts / 20 digs against Point, following that performance with a line of 14 ks / 25 asts / 15 digs against Loyola.
  • Corrina Porch-Maxey totaled 33 kills across both matches, while Kendel Lee Frazer tallied 32. Frazer recorded a career-high 20 kills against Loyola.
  • Tatum Beech led Mobile with 63 total assists in Mobile's 6-2 offense, recording 34 alone to open Friday's action.
  • On the defensive side, libero Lexi Gillette managed 56 total digs to pace Mobile across both matches, notching a stellar 42 digs against the Skyhawks.
  • Mobile's front line came away with 20 blocks in both matches, four of which were solo blocks.

SSAC Volleyball Championship 

Friday's results sends Mobile back to the title match in the SSAC for the third time in four years, facing Blue Mountain Christian for the second-straight season. Blue Mountain, this year's regular season champions and top seed of the conference tournament, has managed a perfect 4-0 record in the postseason, while recording three wins over Mobile already this year. The Toppers are undefeated against SSAC opponents this season.

For Mobile, the Rams will look to carry the momentum against Blue Mountain in the championship final scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 11 at 2:00 p.m. CT. 

The championship match will be played at the Multiplex at Cramton Bowl in downtown Montgomery, Ala., and will be broadcasted live HERE.
