EMORY FOLMAR SOCCER COMPLEX | MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The University of Mobile Men's Soccer team, led by 10th-year head coach Daniel Whelan, earned the program's third SSAC Men's Soccer Championship banner on Friday night, Nov. 10, defeating conference rival William Carey (Miss.) in shutout fashion on a damp night in Montgomery, Ala. Mobile, six-time regular season champions in the conference, has not won the tournament title since the 2017 season, but snapped that streak on Friday for the Rams' 12th-straight win on the season. Mobile improves to 14-2-2 overall this year.
The conference championship automatically qualifies Mobile for the 2023 NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship Tournament, the fifth consecutive year that the Rams have qualified. The national tournament is slated to begin on Thursday, Nov. 16 with first round action across several host sites. The at-large bids will be announced on Monday, Nov. 13 by the NAIA.
Match Recap: Rams Are Champs
In Friday's conference final, Mobile defeated William Carey 1-0 for the second time this season. The Rams claimed this year's regular season title and top seed of the conference tournament on the Crusaders' home field back on Oct. 21 with a 1-0 win. On Friday, William Carey looked for revenge over the Rams, but was unable to do so.
Mobile's Sebastian Jorgge scored in the 17th minute of the match for the match's only score of the night. Darlinton Aboagye picked up the assist on Jorgge's impressive goal. Rained picked up in the second half of Friday's championship, with the final 45 minutes going scoreless.
Mobile out-shot the Crusaders 10-5, with a 6-1 edge in shots on goal. The Rams also produced a 6-2 edge in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Ty Turner picked up a one-save shutout for the Rams, his 12th shutout of the season, while William Carey's keeper Andreas Kokoska delivered five saves, allowing the lone goal.
