Rams Cruise Past Dillard in Three-Game Weekend Series at Jacobs Field

Mobile Records Another Non-Conference Sweep at Home

JACOBS FIELD, MOBILE, Ala. - The University of Mobile Baseball team returned home to Jacobs Field over the weekend, hosting Dillard University for three games on Feb. 24-25. Throughout the three games played, Mobile dominated the newly-formed baseball program at Dillard, outscoring the Bleu Devils in the series, 45-10.

In game one on Friday night, the Rams scored a 19-3 victory over Dillard, with 11 runs coming in the fifth inning alone. In the doubleheader the following day, Mobile began the afternoon with a 15-2 win, and wrapped up the series with an 11-5 victory to improve to 14-2 overall on the 2023 season one weekend ahead of conference play.

Game One Notables - Mobile 19, Dillard 3
  • The Rams tallied 19 runs off 13 hits, while allowing just three Dillard runs off six hits. Just one of Dillard's three runs became earned on the night.
  • Two-time SSAC Baseball Player of the Week this season, Trevor Andrews, started the scoring with his seventh home run of the season in the bottom of the first. He eventually finished 2-for-3 at the plate, scoring three runs and working a walk.
  • Tucker Musgrove launched his third long ball of the year in the win, leading Mobile with three hits. 
  • Shortstop Sam Bowman led Mobile with four RBIs, finishing 2-for-3 at the dish.
  • On the mound, head coach Jon Seymour sent only two pitchers to the rubber, with Michael Sikes getting the start and pitching four three-hit innings and striking out seven. Jeffrey Griffin closed out the game with a three-inning save, striking out three and allowing one earned run.
  • Seymour eventually sent 19 total players to the field for action in the blowout win.

Game Two Notables - Mobile 15, Dillard 2
  • Mobile started game two off with a bang, scoring 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning after seeing a four-pitch inning by Rams starting pitcher Stephen Poche' a half inning before. 
  • Poche' eventually earned the win on the mound, pitching five innings and allowing five hits and two runs.
  • Caleb Summerlin and Jacob Davis relieved Poche' from the bullpen, combining for two hitless innings.
  • At the plate, Tucker Musgrove, Trevor Andrews, and Samuel Plash all recorded two hits each, with all three collecting homers in the game. Plash led the team with five runs driven in. 
  • The Rams out-hit Dillard in game two 12-5, and saw 22 players appear in the game at some point.

Game Three Notables - Mobile 11, Dillard 5
  • In the series finale, Dillard grabbed their first lead of the weekend with a solo home run in the top of the second inning. However, Mobile quickly answered and took the lead one inning later. 
  • With the exception of the first inning, the Rams scored in every inning in game three, tallying four runs alone in the fourth. 
  • Mobile finished with 10 hits in the win, allowing just five Bleu Devil hits.
  • Four players combined for two RBIs each, with those being Tucker Musgrove, Jackson Breal, Sam Bowman, and Sean Mason. Musgrove and Mason were joined by Landon Moore in leading the team with two hits each in the victory.
  • On the bump, Kyle White allowed just two hits in four innings of work, striking out four. Matthew Holston then pitched two relief innings, allowing two runs and collecting four strike outs and three walks. Haden Parker closed out the game with one inning of work, allowing one earned run off one hit.

On to SSAC Play

After Mobile scored the third series sweep at home on the season this weekend over Dillard, the Rams are set to begin conference play at Jacobs Field next weekend, facing off with the Knights of Middle Georgia State on Friday and Saturday, Mar. 3-4. 

Next weekend's series is slated to begin on Friday with a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. CT. The series finale is scheduled for Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. CT.
