Luck Not on Mobile's Side in 2023 Season Opener at the Jungle

No. 2 Mobile Shut Out at Home to No. 9 Keiser

THE JUNGLE SOCCER COMPLEX, MOBILE, Ala. - Despite holding the NAIA's ninth-ranked team Keiser University (Fla.) to just three shots across 90 minutes, the University of Mobile Men's Soccer program, who enters the 2023 season ranked No. 2 in the NAIA, fell to the Seahawks 2-0 on Thursday evening, Aug. 24 to open the 2023 season. Mobile, led by 10th-year head coach Daniel Whelan, dominated possession of the ball throughout the match, but was unable to defend two second half goals by Keiser.

Thursday's meeting between Mobile and Keiser is the third meeting over the last two years, with Keiser winning each match over the Rams, including the 2021 NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship final.

Inside the Box Score

Mobile managed a total of 10 shots in the first half, while holding the Seahawks to zero shots through the first 45 minutes. With the scored tied 0-0 at the break, it was Keiser who came out hot early in the second, notching the first goal of the match on the first shot taken by the team. Keiser's goal came in the 52nd minute.

Despite several chances, Mobile's shots continued to just miss and Keiser eventually netted an insurance goal in the 61st minute. Trailing 2-0, Keiser's back line held against the Mobile offense and the Rams were shut out in the first match of the season. Mobile ended the first match of the year with 21 total shots taken, seven on-goal, but earned just one corner kick. Lucas Ros, Zacharia Hasler, and Joseph McMahon all led the Rams with three shots each in the loss.

Back to Work on a Hot Saturday Afternoon

The Rams have a quick turnaround following a tough loss to No. 9 Keiser on Thursday as Mobile is scheduled to face Southwestern University (Okla.) on Saturday afternoon at home. Saturday's match is set for 2:00 p.m. CT at the Jungle, with temperatures expected to surpass 100 degrees in Mobile, Ala.
