WEST POINT, Ga. - In the first conference match of the 2023 season, the University of Mobile Women's Soccer team cruised to a 5-0 shutout victory over Point University (Ga.) on Thursday evening, Sept. 14 in a match that was eventually shortened by weather. Mobile's five goals became before the weather delay in the 74th minute, which then forced officials to end the match early and give the Rams the win to open SSAC play. The overall record for Mobile improves to 4-2-1 on the season following Thursday's victory.
Match Recap: Mobile Tallies Five
The Rams hit the scoreboard early in the first-ever conference match with Point University as Point joined the SSAC during the last offseason. Raegan Latiolais gave Mobile the team's first lead with her second goal of the season in just the ninth minute of the match after some fancy dribbling past the Skyhawk goalkeeper and a deep pass from teammate Emily Silbernagel. Just four minutes later, the Rams went up two goals following Olivia Quiroz's first goal of the season. Quiroz's goal came after Andi Hughes chipped a shot high over the keeper. With the goalkeeper out of place, Quiroz took advantage and put the Rams up two.
Later in the first half, Andi Hughes was right back in the thick of things offensively as the freshman recorded her third goal of the season. Hughes' goal came in the 28th minute, with Carla Saborido earning the assist. From there, Mobile took a 3-0 advantage to halftime.
Mobile continued to pressure the Point back line in the second half, eventually seeing Raegan Latiolais net her second goal of the match. Latiolais' second score came after a deflection inside the box rolled to her cleat, which saw the sophomore lace a strike past the keeper to give the Rams a 4-0 lead. Mobile's offense was not finished there, however, as Sophie Roberts got into the scoring category in the 69th minute with her second goal of the season. Roberts was the lone Ram from the Mobile bench to score on Thursday.
Just five minutes after Mobile's fifth goal, a lightning delay was issued. From there, officials eventually ended the match early as lightning continued in the West Point, Ga. area for the next hour.
Overall, Mobile dominated the stat sheet, outshooting the Skyhawks, 29-5. Mobile saw 15 shots on target and took a total of 19 shots alone in the first 45 minutes of the match. Raegan Latiolais led the team with seven shots taken, with Carla Saborido finishing with six shots. Juliana Gomez, the reigning SSAC Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, earned the shutout win for Mobile in the net, picking up three saves in the process.
