AUSTILL PHARR GYMNASIUM | MOBILE, Ala. - After over a week passed without seeing any action on the court, the University of Mobile Volleyball team returned to play on Tuesday, Sept. 6, hosting Pensacola Christian College (Fla.) in a non-divisional matchup in Pharr Gymnasium. Mobile eased past the Eagles of PCC on Tuesday, sweeping the opposition 25-16, 25-15, 25-9 to earn the team's sixth win of the season. Additionally, Tuesday's sweep over Pensacola Christian marks the 16th sweep all-time over the Eagles in 18 total matches played. The win improves Mobile's overall record on the season to 6-3.
Match Recap: Rams Knock Off Rust
In the first set on Tuesday evening, Mobile and Pensacola Christian traded points through the first eight rallies of the match until the Rams put together a 5-0 run with junior setter Tatum Beech serving. From there, Mobile kept a small lead over the Eagles throughout the remainder of the set, eventually recording another 5-0 run to win the first set by nine points. Mobile's offense was solid across set number one, with the Rams tallying 16 kills on 31 attempts. However, Mobile committed six service errors early to keep PCC close in the first set.
Across sets two and three, the Rams only improved from the service line as the team committed just three total service errors throughout the remainder of the match. In addition, Tatum Beech was lights out while serving, leading all players with a career-high six service aces in Mobile's win. In the second set alone, Mobile put together another offensive run with Beech serving, scoring seven-straight points and seeing Beech secure three aces during the run. She ended the second set with five aces total as Mobile earned a 10-point win in set number two.
In the third and final set, it was all Mobile as the Rams cruised to a 25-9 win to put the match away. In 21 attack attempts, Mobile finished the third set with 14 kills, good for a .524 hitting percentage. Overall, the Rams finished the night with a .368 hitting line, totaling 40 kills as a team.
Corrina Porch-Maxey led all players with 11 kills on Tuesday, hitting .318. Senior Jordan Wood proved to be very consistent on the attack against PCC, recording nine kills on 16 attempts. Wood finished with a .500 hitting percentage. Behind Wood and Porch-Maxey, three players tallied five kills each in the victory. Layton Adams led the Rams with 19 assists, followed closely by Tatum Beech with 18.
Defensively, Aspen Adams led Mobile with 10 digs, while libero Lexi Gillette collected nine. As a team, Mobile came away with 10 blocks, led by senior Aleah Kennedy with three.
SSAC Volleyball Has Arrived
Following Tuesday's win for the Rams, Mobile is scheduled to begin the conference portion of the 2023 schedule as conference rival William Carey (Miss.) comes to town on Thursday, Sept. 8. Mobile v. William Carey is the SSAC opener for both teams and is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. CT in Pharr Gymnasium.
