AUSTILL PHARR GYMNASIUM | MOBILE, Ala. - After a crushing road loss to William Carey University (Miss.) just two days prior, the University of Mobile Men's Basketball team bounced back with a 22-point win over the Point University (Ga.) on Saturday, Jan. 20, defeating the Skyhawks 70-48 and improving to 15-4 overall in the process. Mobile's conference record improves to 8-3 following the win over Point, with the Rams sitting in sole possession of third place in the current SSAC Men's Basketball standings after Saturday's results.
Game Recap
Mobile never trailed in Saturday's win, shooting 48% from the floor throughout the first half of Saturday's contest. The Rams made 14 shots in the first 20 minutes, connecting with four made three-pointers, and leading by as much as 20 points. However, the Rams struggled from the free throw line throughout the first half, only making seven of 15 attempts to keep Point's hopes alive in the game. For the Skyhawks, offense was hard to come by as Point managed just an 8-for-31 shooting line throughout the first half. Mobile led 39-23 at the break.
In the second half, Point cut the deficit to just 10 points at one point in the closing 20 minutes, but saw two of their taller players foul out of the game. Offense continued to be an issue for Point as the team only added eight more makes from the floor in the second. Point finished Saturday with a 27% shooting percentage. Meanwhile, Mobile notched 31 points in the half, eventually winning by 22 points. Mobile's shooting percentage sat at 43.5% at the final buzzer, with the free throw percentage sitting at 47% following the win.
The win hands Mobile the regular season sweep over Point during the 2023-24 regular season, with the Skyhawks still winless in the SSAC with an 0-11 conference record.
Box Score Notables
Ezra McKenna picked up his 15th double-double of the season on Saturday, leading all players with 18 points and 10 rebounds. DaMariee Jones followed McKenna with 15 points, putting the junior three points shy of 1,000 during his collegiate career. Jones added seven rebounds, but saw foul trouble limit his playing time.
Treylan Smith joined Jones in scoring 15 points, knocking down two made threes in the process, while Trent Moye tallied 11 points with three successful three point shots. As a team, the Rams recorded 11 assists and 10 steals, with PJ King pacing Mobile with five assists and three steals. Mobile forced 19 turnovers, scoring 19 points off Point giveaways.
Point did manage to out-rebound the Rams in Saturday's game, the one highlight in the box score for the Skyhawks. Point collected 48 rebounds compared to Mobile's 37, with 15 being offensive boards. Mobile only tallied eight offensive rebounds in the win.

Mobile is scheduled to return to action next Wednesday, Jan. 24 with a road conference game against Thomas University (Ga.) in Thomasville, Ga. Next Wednesday's game is set for 6:30 p.m. CT as Mobile looks to sweep the Night Hawks during the regular season.
Mobile defeated Thomas 102-65 back on Nov. 16 to open the conference portion of the schedule.
