DALTON, Ga. - In a match featuring two of the NAIA's top three ranked teams in the country, No. 1 Dalton State College (Ga.) managed a 2-0 victory over the University of Mobile Men's Soccer team on Friday night, Oct. 11, with the Rams sitting at No. 3 in the latest NAIA Men's Soccer Top 25 Coaches' Poll. Additionally, Friday's match was tabbed as the SSAC Men's Soccer Game of the Week.
The loss for Mobile is just the Rams' second defeat of the season as the team falls to 10-2-1 on the year, snapping a streak of six consecutive victories in the process. Meanwhile, Dalton State remains unbeaten on the year with a 10-0-1 record. Mobile's SSAC record now sits at 5-1-0 this season, while Dalton State has put together a 4-0-1 showing in the conference.
Mobile Blanked by No. 1
Friday's match remained scoreless until halfway through the second half where the Roadrunners were able to break the scoreless tie with a go-ahead goal in the 73rd minute. Prior to the game's first score, Mobile did not record a shot in the first half, while Dalton State recorded three.
Jack Stainrod put the Roadrunners ahead in front of the home crowd in north Georgia, with the assist coming from Giovanni Poilero. Dalton State then played excellent defense to keep the Rams off the scoreboard, eventually adding an insurance goal in the final minute of the match to win, 2-0.
Dalton State out-shot Mobile 9-3, with the Rams taking the fewest shots in a match this season. None of the three shots Mobile recorded were on target, while Dalton State took six shots-on-goal. Mobile keeper Ty Turner picked up four saves in the shutout loss.
Bounce Back on Sunday
Mobile looks to get back into the win column with another big SSAC match on Sunday, Oct. 13, facing off the Life University in Marietta, Ga. Sunday's match against Life is set for 3:00 p.m. CT.
