MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The University of Mobile Women's Soccer team concluded the 2024 season with a tough loss in the semifinals of the SSAC Women's Soccer Championship Tournament on Thursday, Nov. 7, falling 5-0 to UT-Southern (Tenn.) in Montgomery, Ala. The match marked the Rams' exit from conference championship contention after a hard-fought season which saw Mobile end the year with a 9-6-3 overall record.
Match Summary
Mobile was eventually overpowered by a dominant Tennessee Southern squad, which improved to 16-1-1 with the semifinal win. Entering the postseason, UT-Southern clinched the top seed and regular season championship in the SSAC, while sitting at No. 4 across the entire NAIA.
UT-Southern took control early on in Thursday's match, scoring in just the third minute of the semifinal contest. By halftime, Mobile trailed 3-0 following two additional goals by the Firehawks, who ended the first 45 minutes outshooting Mobile, 14-0.
Mobile's defensive efforts were tested throughout, with goalkeeper Ebba Elweroth making seven saves across the entirety of the match. However, UT-Southern's relentless pressure proved too much in the end. The Firehawks tacked on in the second half, adding a pair of goals in the second half to bring the score to 5-0. Mobile struggled offensively, managing only three total shots, with just one on target, while UT-Southern finished with 25 shots, 12 of which were on goal.
The nine-win season for Mobile is the Rams' first since the 2019 campaign, while winning seven conference matches for the first time since 2014.
