Mobile Tennis Teams Go 2-0 Against NCAA Opponents Over the Weekend

Rams Come Up with Two Road Victories Over the Weekend

TUSKEGEE, Ala. - The University of Mobile Men's and Women's teams put together a strong weekend on the road this past weekend, managing wins at LaGrange College (Ga.) and Tuskegee University (Ala.) across Feb. 23-24. Both LaGrange and Tuskegee are members of the NCAA, with Tuskegee being a member of the higher NCAA Division II. LaGrange is a NCAA D-III institution.

The wins for the Rams on the weekend continues to improve the overall records on the young 2024 season, with the women's team advancing to 4-1 on the year, while the men's team stays perfect at 4-0.

Women's Recap

Mobile opened with a strong 9-0 victory over LaGrange College, dominating throughout the entire match. Karolina Mrowiecova won from No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-1, while winning from the top-seeded doubles match with partner Luana Wild, 8-0. Mobile's two through six flights in singles action each won their respective match 6-0, 6-0 against LaGrange. In double plays, the Rams won all three doubles matches, 8-0.

One day later, Mobile came away with a 4-3 victory over a talented Tuskegee team after trailing 3-2 late in the match. Freshman Caroline Johnson came up with a massive 10-point tiebreaker victory from No. 5 singles to even the match up at three wins a piece. Johnson won, 5-7, 6-3, 10-7. Mobile's sixth-seeded player in Rachel McMullan then won 6-4, 6-0 to clinch the match for Mobile. In doubles play, Mobile won two of the three matches played.

Men's Recap

On the men's side, the Rams stayed perfect on the season with the two weekend wins, earning a 9-0 victory over LaGrange to kick off play. Joao Pedro Okano got the nod as Mobile's top-seeded player against LaGrange, cruising 6-0, 6-0 in singles play. Okano then won 8-0 in doubles action with teammate Alex Verdu. Across the entire match, Mobile only dropped three sets as a team against LaGrange on Friday.

The following day, Mobile earned another shutout win in the form of a 7-0 victory at Tuskegee University. Okano earned a 6-0, 6-2 win from the top flight in the lineup, followed by a 6-3, 6-2 win from Alex Verdu in No. 2 singles. In doubles play, the Rams took each match against Tuskegee, highlighted by a 6-0 win from No. 3 doubles by Sergio Ruiz Ramiro and Santiago Reina.

Crosstown Rivals Meet Again

Both tennis teams at Mobile are scheduled to return to play on Wednesday, Feb. 28, battling Spring Hill College (Ala.) at the Mobile Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala. Mobile versus Spring Hill was originally scheduled for Feb. 16, but saw weather postpone the event.
