H. AUSTILL PHARR GYMNASIUM | MOBILE, Ala. - University of Mobile Volleyball wrapped up a weekend long tournament in Pharr Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon, Aug. 24, facing Dillard University (La.) in the 13th total match played in the Pharr across the last three days. Mobile has looked solid in the hosted tournament, winning two matches on both Thursday and Friday before playing one match on Saturday.
In the Saturday evening matchup, the Rams eventually swept the Bleu Devils of Dillard in the tournament finale, with Mobile staying perfect on the home floor. The 5-0 weekend for Mobile saw three sweeps and extends the winning streak to eight consecutive matches. The Rams are 8-1 through nine matches to begin the 2024 season.
Porch-Maxey Leads Mobile to Victory
Hitting was not consistent for either side in Saturday's matchup, with both teams committing over 15 attack errors across the three sets played. Mobile did record 38 kills on 108 attempts, but the 23 errors led to a .139 hitting percentage. Eventually, the .043 attack percentage on Dillard's end allowed Mobile 25-17, 25-23, 25-13 set victories.
Junior Corrina Porch-Maxey was a bright spot on the offense for Mobile, with the outside hitter pacing all players with 15 kills in the match. Porch-Maxey hit .355 in the win, making just four errors in 31 attempts. She currently leads Mobile with 111 kills through nine matches this season.
Kendel Lee Frazer followed Porch-Maxey with six kills in the win, while true freshman Sophie Dorris picked up a season-high five kills. Tatum Beech recorded 19 assists in the tournament finale, giving her a whopping 108 assists on the weekend. In the 6-2 ran offense, Beech has a strong case to go back-to-back as SSAC Volleyball Setter of the Week on Monday.
Defensively, Jaci Drinnon tallied 16 digs, finishing as the only Ram with double-digit dig totals. Aspen Adams managed eight digs and Beech followed with seven. Drinnon went on to produce heavily from the service line, picking up eight aces in three sets. The libero is tied for sixth all-time in aces in a single match following her performance against Dillard.
Rams Head Back to South Florida
After opening the 2024 season with a four-match tournament in West Palm Beach, Fla., Mobile is set to travel back to the southern part of Florida for a tournament in Miami Gardens. The Rams are scheduled for four matches next weekend, starting with two on Saturday, Aug. 31. Mobile opens the tourney against Florida Memorial, a team the Rams swept on Friday at home.
