MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - The University of Mobile Volleyball team wrapped up a weekend long tournament in Miami, Fla. on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 1, with Mobile playing four total non-conference matches over the last two days and finishing with a 2-2 overall record. The Rams opened action in south Florida with two afternoon victories on Saturday, extending a current winning streak to 10 matches, but faced tough competition one day later and saw the team's win streak snapped with a pair of losses.
Heading home to begin the conference portion of the 2024 schedule, Mobile is 10-3 overall on the season.
Weekend Highlights
On Saturday, Mobile battled Florida Memorial for the second time this season to open weekend action, eventually earning a sweep (25-10, 25-18, 25-18) over the Lions to start the tournament on a high note. Later that day, the Rams earned a four-set win (25-19, 27-25, 24-26, 25-18) over Webber International (Fla.) to extend the current winning streak to 10. Over the first two matches played, Mobile recorded 98 kills as a team, hitting .286 against FMU and .146 against WIU.
The next day, Mobile was scheduled to face No. 8 Park University (Mo.) to begin the day and suffered the first sweep (20-25, 16-25, 15-25) of the season to the Pirates. The Rams then faced off with No. 19 St. Thomas University (Fla.) on the Bobcats' home floor and grab the attention of the SUN Conference member by forcing five sets. Eventually, St. Thomas managed the five-set win, cutting Mobile's upset bid just short to end the weekend. Mobile fell to St. Thomas, 17-25, 27-25, 20-25, 26-24, 10-15.
Across both matches on Sunday, Mobile's hitting percentage took a dip, with the Rams failing to hit north of .150 in either match. Mobile recorded 83 total kills in eight total sets played against the two ranked opponents.
Individually, Corrina Porch-Maxey led all players on Mobile's roster with 45 kills across the 2-2 weekend, while Tatum Beech paced Mobile with 69 assists. Beech is the reigning two-time SSAC Volleyball Setter of the Week. On the defensive side, Jaci Drinnon notched 70 digs in the four matches played.Â
