Rams Suffer First Defeat of 2024 Season

No. 8 Mobile Falls to 20th-Ranked Cumberlands in Atlanta

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. - Set for two big non-conference matches in Atlanta, Ga. on the weekend, the University of Mobile Men's Soccer team began action against the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) on Saturday evening, Aug. 31, eventually falling 1-0 to the 20th-ranked team in the latest NAIA Men's Soccer Top 25 Coaches' Poll. Mobile entered the weekend ranked No. 8 in the same poll, but saw the Patriots manage an upset, handing the Rams their first loss of the season.

Mobile is now 3-1-0 on the year with one match against ranked competition remaining in Atlanta.

Through three matches on the year, Mobile has not conceded a goal to opponents and has earned three shutout victories. On Saturday, the Cumberlands broke that streak with a goal in the 40th minute off the head of striker Rodrigo Riveros following a cross. The Patriots managed the 1-0 lead to the break, out-shooting Mobile 4-3 through the first 45 minutes of the match.

In the second half, the Rams' intensity picked up and showed they were the better team on the pitch in the final 45 minutes. However, the Cumberlands eventually kept Mobile off the scoreboard through the full 90 minutes despite the Rams taking 13 shots. 10 of the 13 shots for Mobile came in the second half, while four were recorded on-goal.

In the box score, Mobile led in shots taken, shots-on-goal, and corner kicks, but just could not get the ball to fall in net. Henrique Luro Mendes led the Rams with three shots in the defeat, while Joseph McMahon and Emilio Cazares each recorded two. Goalkeeper Ty Turner notched two saves, while allowing the eventual game-winner in the first half. Turner has faced 10 shots across four matches this season, picking up nine saves.

Atlanta Action Rolls On

Mobile turns the attention to a Labor Day matchup in Atlanta following Saturday's loss, with the Rams scheduled to face Grace College (Ind.) at 11:00 a.m. CT on Monday, Sept. 13. Grace is ranked No. 13 in the latest coaches' poll in the NAIA.
