Rams Defeat Rival William Carey on Friday; Jon Campbell Records Career Win No. 500 at University of Mobile

UM Volleyball Remains Unbeaten in SSAC

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - In a battle featuring the top two teams in the current SSAC Volleyball standings, the University of Mobile Volleyball team came away with a four-set victory over conference rival William Carey (Miss.) on Friday evening, Sept. 20 in Hattiesburg, Miss. The win for Mobile is the Rams' sixth consecutive and improves the overall record to 16-3 on the year, while staying perfect at 5-0 in conference play. Mobile remains the only unbeaten team in the SSAC following Friday's result.

Additionally, Friday night's win came with an impressive milestone as 20th-year head coach Jon Campbell collected his 500th-career victory at the University of Mobile alone. Just last season, Campbell earned his 600th-career win throughout his entire collegiate coaching career. He, along with wife and assistant coach Amber Campbell, began the volleyball program at Mobile in 2005.

Rams Get It Done in Four

Mobile set the tone of Friday's matchup with rival William Carey early in set one, winning 25-14 with 12 total kills. However, William Carey responded across set two, tying the match 1-1 following a 25-23 victory. The Crusaders took advantage of Mobile miscues in the second set to earn the win. In the third, the two rivals battled back and forth, which eventually saw the Rams come away with a 26-24 win. Riding momentum from the third set, Mobile went on to take the fourth set 25-22 to clinch the match in four sets.

Mobile collected 15 kills in each of the second and fourth sets for match highs, and finished the night with a .212 hitting percentage as a team. The Rams tallied 56 total kills as a unit on 151 attempts, committing 24 errors. William Carey recorded 49 kills on 139 attempts, while recording 18 errors.

Corrina Porch-Maxey continued her strong season with a match-high 17 kills, committing only three attack errors across the match and hitting .400 on the night. Porch-Maxey not only paces the team with 219 kills this season, but leads the entire SSAC in that category. She was followed by Aspen Adams with 13 kills and Layton Adams with 10. Aspen added six service aces and 12 digs, while Layton managed 17 assists, 11 digs, and three aces. Jaci Drinnon led Mobile with 20 digs, followed by Lexi Gillette with 13. For Drinnon, the first-year Ram continues to pace the entire conference with 328 digs on the year.

Tatum Beech led the Rams with 25 assists in the win, bringing her career total to 1,960 assists total in four seasons. Beech is set to become just the fifth member of the University of Mobile Volleyball program to reach the 2,000-assist plateau if she can record 40 more this season. She has notched 362 this season and averages 5.57 assists per set through 19 matches.

Back to Work on Saturday

Mobile has a quick turnaround as the Rams hit the road to New Orleans, La. on Saturday, Sept. 21. The Rams will meet Loyola University (La.) on Saturday for the first time this season, scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. CT match against the Wolf Pack.
