Women's Basketball Opens Season at Stillman's Tip-Off Classic

Rams beat Stillman to start season before falling to Fisk

BIRTHRIGHT ALUMNI HALL | TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The University of Mobile Women's Basketball tipped off the 2025-2026 season in Tuscaloosa, Alabama at Stillman's Women's Basketball Tip-Off Classic. The Rams opened the season on October 31st at 11:00am CT against Stillman College before taking on Fisk at 1:00pm CT on November 1st. The women's basketball team is looking to follow up an impressive 2024-2025 campaign where they finished as the runners-up in the SSAC Conference Tournament championship game and made the NAIA Women's Basketball National Tournament Opening Round for the second year in a row.

Game One Recap | Mobile (67) vs. Stillman (53):

Just one returner from the 2024-2025 squad featured in the starting five for Mobile as Head Coach Sydney Westry opted to utilize her new recruits in the opener. Mobile opened up the first quarter of the new season down by one point to the hosts, trailing 13-14. The Rams struggled to shoot efficiently in the second quarter but would manage to take a 28-27 lead into halftime behind Jarniya Maddox's 12 points. Lamaria Jones would lead the Rams in the second half as Mobile built up their lead with the junior forward scoring 15 points across the third and fourth quarters. Mobile's shooting percentage improved drastically in the fourth quarter as they shot above 50% for the first time in the contest. The Rams outscored the Tigers 20-11 in the fourth quarter to win the season opener 67-53.

Lamaria Jones scored 21 points in the contest with 4 rebounds, 1 block and 1 steal. Jada Johnson also contributed effectively in her debut as she put up 8 points and 12 rebounds to just narrowly miss out on a double-double. Jarniya Maddox put up 14 points in her first appearance with the Rams shooting 7-12 from the field.

Game Two Recap | Mobile (75) vs. Fisk (81):

Mobile's first points of game two came from a Deja Pryor three pointer which was followed up by McKenna Sinon who hit two threes of her own as Mobile took a 9-7 lead at the 5:30 mark during the first quarter. Mobile shot 35.3% during the first quarter as they trailed Fisk 17-20. In the second quarter Fisk outscored Mobile by a single point as Mobile trailed the opposition 39-43 after 20 minutes. McKenna Sinon ended the first half with 12 points and 2 assists. Having kept pace with Fisk for the first two quarters, Mobile's shooting percentage dropped in the third and the Bulldogs were able to pull ahead, taking a 14 point lead into the fourth and final quarter. In the fourth quarter Mobile was able to mount a comeback, but their efforts were a little too late as they cut the lead down to 6 with just 10 seconds left. Mobile would fall 75-81 despite outscoring Fisk 24-16 in the last quarter. 

Returning guard Hannah Benoit put up a double-double in the loss, scoring 19 points and grabbing 10 rebounds while adding 3 steals and an assist. Deja Pryor had 9 points, 4 assists and 4 steals in her 27 minute appearance, leading the team in both the assist and steal categories.

Up Next for the Rams

The Rams will return home for a Tuesday evening contest against Stillman College at 5:30pm CT in the Pharr Gymnasium.
