MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The University of Mobile men's soccer team opened its 2025 season on Thursday night with a 4-0 loss to Cumberland University at Faulkner University in Montgomery, Alabama.
The match, originally set for a 7:30 p.m. start, was delayed nearly two hours due to weather in the area impacting earlier games. Kickoff came shortly after 9:00 p.m., with both sides seeing their first bits of competitive action this season through the opening day match up.
Cumberland would start strong, making it 1-0 in their favor in the 25th minute. Despite falling behind early, the Rams would hold their ground for the rest of the first half to keep the score at 1-0 after 45 minutes.
The second half proved to be too much for the Rams as the Phoenix would add three more goals to their tally to put the game away. The 4-0 defeat marks Mobile's heaviest loss to an opponent since the 2023 season where they suffered a 4-0 loss at home to William Penn in just the third match of the season that year.
Mobile registered seven total shots in the contest with just 3 of those finding the target. Goalkeeper Sam MacDonald faced 11 shots on goal and recorded 7 saves. Two Rams would find their way into the Referee's book as Guido Solaro and Darlinton Aboagye both picked up yellow cards in the first half.
The contest marked the first match under new head coach Micheal Azira, who officially took over the program's reigns in June from previous head coach Daniel Whelan.
