Tough Loss at Home for Men's Soccer Against Blue Mountain

Rams fall 4-1 to the Toppers in SSAC Opener

THE JUNGLE | MOBILE, Ala. - The University of Mobile Rams men's soccer team saw their struggles continue against Blue Mountain on Thurday night as they fell to 1-6 overall and 0-1 in conference play. The match was pushed back to an 8:15pm start time following several weather delays that affected the women's soccer match prior to the men's game. The Rams are now 1-1 at home this season with the other home match being a 3-0 win over Spartanburg Methodist College.

The Rams opened the match on the front foot, winning four corner kicks in the opening 5 minutes. The Rams would record their first shot on goal in the 13th minute with Joe McMahon seeing his effort save by the Toppers goalkeeper. Depsite the early pressure from the Rams, it would be the Toppers who would find the opening goal in the 21st minute, with freshman goalkeeper Tanner Boxberger unfortunate to see the ball bounce off the far post and into the goal behind him. With the Rams trailing, Mobile piled on more pressure, with the Rams creating opportunities but unable to get shots off to test the goalkeeper. The Rams would find their response in the 30th minute after McMahon was fouled at the top of the box on a counter-attack. With the free kick lined up on the top right side of the Toppers box, freshman midfielder Eugenio Cazares struck a beautiful curling ball into the left upper 90 of the goal, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance of making the save. The rest of the first half went on without much action as both sides had a few hopeful efforts on goal.

The second half saw tensions rise between the two sides as the Toppers committed 18 fouls while the Rams committed 8. With the scores still level in the 62nd minute, the Rams won another free kick at the top of the opposition box. Cazares lined up over the kick once again and almost replicated his earlier goal in the other upper 90 with an incredible save from the Toppers goalkeeper denying him and the Rams the lead. From there, things slipped away from Mobile as the Toppers took the lead in the 68th minute on a tap in effort. The Toppers would score twice in the 77th minute to put the game away as the Rams fell to the Toppers for the first time in history with the overall record between the two sides now standing at 6-1 in favor of the Rams.
