MOBILE SEES ONE MATCH VICTORY IN TOUGH WEEKEND LONG TOURNAMENT
MOBILE, Ala. - It was a tough weekend for the University of Mobile Men's and Women's Tennis programs this past weekend in the SSAC Tennis Roundup at the Mobile Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala. Both tennis teams from UM played a total of four matches in the timespan of 40 hours in the three-day tournament.
On the women's side, no. 18 Mobile lost all four matches, three coming against ranked opponents. In the first match of the tournament, Mobile lost to no. 3 Xavier (La.), 5-0. The following day, the Rams fell in two matches, one being against no. 13 Middle Georgia State, 4-1 and the other being against unranked Blue Mountain College, 4-2. In the final day, Mobile lost to no. 21 Loyola University (La.), 4-0.
Following the weekend long conference tournament during the regular season, UM Women's Tennis' overall season record falls to 5-5 on the year and 0-5 in SSAC play after the hot 5-1 start to the season.
In the men's tournament, the Rams went 1-3, salvaging the weekend finale with a much-needed win. On the first day, no. 12 Mobile fell to no. 10 Xavier (La.), 4-1. Mobile followed the first-day loss with two more losses the following day, one being against no. 7 Middle Georgia State, 4-0 and the other against unranked Blue Mountain College, 4-3. The loss to Blue Mountain is a tough one for the Rams.
On the final day, Mobile managed to defeat Loyola University (La.), 4-1. Loyola is currently receiving votes to enter the NAIA Men's Tennis Top 25 Coaches' poll. The win over the Wolf Pack ended the frustrating weekend on a high note for Mobile.
In the win over Loyola, Kevin Andrusch (SR/Haiterbach, Germany) looked solid, winning his singles match, 6-1, 6-0. Matias Le Fort (SR/Santiago, Chile) also looked good, winning his singles match, 6-4, 6-1. Mobile's Mike Lee (SR/Tucson, Ari.) was the match-clinching point as he won his singles match, 6-4, 6-3. Mobile took two of three in doubles action to earn their fourth point to win the match.
UM Men's Tennis' overall record now sits at 6-4 on the season and 1-4 in conference play.
Both tennis teams at Mobile will look to bounce back on Apr. 3 for the final regular-season match of the season. Mobile will play Loyola (La.) in New Orleans that day at 1:00 p.m. CT.
