LAUREL, Miss. - The University of Mobile Men's Basketball team traveled northwest to Laurel, Miss. on Friday evening, Dec. 9 for a non-divisional game against Southeastern Baptist College, and managed a 66-61 victory over the Chargers to improve to 5-4 overall on the season. With the win over Southeastern Baptist, Mobile improves to 7-0 all-time against the Chargers and led for the entirety of Friday's game. The win was an important one for Mobile as the Rams are set to host two conference games in Pharr Gymnasium next week.
Double-Doubles Lead the Way in Win
Mobile came out strong in Friday's road game, starting the night with a 9-0 run. A well-used timeout by the Southeastern Baptist Head Coach got the Chargers into the game as SBC cut the deficit to just two points early. Later with five minutes left in the first half, the Rams led 29-18 and eventually took a 36-25 lead to halftime. Up 11 points, Mobile looked to increase their lead in the second half, but instead had to fight off an offensive surge by SBC.
Although holding the lead for the entire game, Mobile's lead was eventually cut down to just one point by the Chargers late in the game. Southeastern Baptist managed to outscore Mobile 36-30 in the second half, but the comeback fell short as Mobile came away with the five-point victory.
As a team, Mobile shot 45% from the floor and made 10 of 16 free throw attempts. However, the Rams struggled from deep, making just four of 20 three point attempts. Another number that Mobile will look to improve in future contests was the turnover total on Friday, with the Rams committing 19 turnovers. SBC managed 15 points off Mobile giveaways, while committing 18 turnovers against the Rams. Mobile finished with 22 points off turnovers.
Ezra McKenna and DaMariee Jones led the way for Mobile on Friday, with both recording double-doubles in the win. McKenna led all players with 19 points, with Jones ending the night with 18 points. Both players are currently averaging over 13 points per game through nine games played and notched 10 rebounds each on Friday. As a team, Mobile out-rebounded SBC, 36-20.
Trent Moye finished with 10 points in the win and led Mobile with four steals in the victory. Moye leads Mobile by averaging over 14 points per game. Moye, McKenna, and Jones all combined four eight assists against the Chargers.
