Rams Drop First Series of 2022 Campaign Over the Weekend

Mobile Pitching Struggles Against the Badgers in Weekend Three-Game Series

MOBILE, Ala. - The University of Mobile Baseball program met crosstown rival Spring Hill College over the weekend for a three-game series. Two games were played at Jacobs Field on Friday, Feb. 18 while the series finale was played at Stan Galle Field at Spring Hill College on Saturday. The Rams managed a 8-5 victory over Spring Hill in game one of the serious, but fell to the Badgers 16-4 in game two and 14-6 the following day to drop the series.

In game one, the Rams were led by Tucker Musgrove on the mound in the win as he managed to pitch a season-high six innings. Musgrove allowed just three hits across the six innings pitched while striking out six batters. The offense for Mobile tallied eight runs off seven hits in the victory with Landon Moore leading the team with two runs-batted-in. Moore finished 1-3 with a walk and run scored. Mobile extended the then winning streak to four games in the game one victory.

In game two, Spring Hill's offense exploded with 16 runs off 11 hits. Game two was only a seven-inning game as the Badgers' big inning came in the final inning with six runs scored. In an effort to save bullpen arms, Mobile Head Coach Jon Seymour called on catcher Christian Waltman to pitch in the final inning as he pitched 2/3 of an inning in the seventh. Overall, Seymour used four total pitchers excluding Waltman as the Rams tallied just four runs in the loss, two in the final inning. Samuel Plash was the only Ram to record multiple hits as the designated hitter finished 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI.

The following afternoon at Stan Galle Field, the Rams and Badgers put on an offensive clinic, scoring a combined 20 runs off 27 hits between the two teams. Spring Hill held the lead for the entire bout with the largest lead coming late in the game at eight runs. Jon Seymour used five pitchers on Saturday afternoon with each allowing at least one run in the game. On the offensive side, Samuel Plash once again led the Rams with the bat, finishing with a line of 3-for-4, HR (2), 2B, 5 RBI, R. On the weekend, Plash managed to hit .778 in nine at-bats while recording a homer, two doubles, and eight RBI, giving him a solid chance at the SSAC's Baseball Player of the Week honor.

The Rams will begin conference play in their next scheduled games of the season next weekend. Mobile will travel to Talladega, Ala. for a three-game series against the Talladega College Tornadoes on Mar. 4-5. Game one is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. CT on Friday with a doubleheader to follow the next day at 1:00 p.m. CT also.
