Mobile Sweeps No. 11 Georgia Gwinnett in Weekend Doubleheader

Rams Claim Two Impressive Wins Over 11th-Ranked Grizzlies in Lawrenceville, Ga.

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The University of Mobile Softball team traveled to Lawrenceville, Ga. on Saturday, Feb. 19 for a big non-conference doubleheader against the 11th-ranked Georgia Gwinnett Grizzlies. Entering Saturday's game, Mobile has been receiving votes for entry in the current NAIA Softball Top 25 Coaches' Poll and will likely receive a top-25 rating following a sweep over No. 11 Georgia Gwinnett in two games this past weekend.

In game one, Mobile used a comeback to score the victory after the Rams scored three runs in the final two innings to win the game, 3-1. Georgia Gwinnett managed to score their lone run in the third inning and held the Rams scoreless until the sixth. However, Caitlin McRee's sacrifice fly in the sixth tied the game. 

In the final inning, Mobile scored two go-ahead runs following Kristen Black's first triple of the season. As a team, Mobile recorded five hits as Emily Butts dominated in the pitcher's circle, finishing with a complete-game win. Butts improves her season record to 2-0 while allowing just one run off five hits. She struck out two batters.

In game two, Mobile's bats came alive in the fourth inning as the Rams got to scoring party started with a six-run inning. Madilyn Sheffield started the scoring with a two-run single up the middle and Jaden Morace followed with a two-run double to the gap in left center. Caitlin McRee later singled in another run in the inning for Mobile and Carleigh Bowden finished up the strong inning with an RBI single through the left side of the diamond.

After the Grizzlies scored their lone run in the fifth inning, Mobile tacked on two more insurance runs in the seventh off a two-run single from McRee and won the game, 8-1. Caitlin McRee finished with four RBI across the two games played and went 3-5 at the plate in game two. Madilyn Sheffield was a perfect 4-4 at the plate in game two and Jaden Morace and Kaylee Pullin each managed two hits. As a team, the Rams tallied a whopping 16 hits through seven innings and only allowed three hits for the opposition. Brinkley Goff pitched four scoreless innings while Avery Johnston finished with three innings of work, allowing the lone Grizzlies run.



Mobile moves to 4-0 on the young 2022 season following the doubleheader sweep over Georgia Gwinnett and has out-scored opponents 40-4 in the four games played. The Rams travel to New Orleans, La. on Wednesday, Feb. 23 for a non-conference doubleheader with Xavier University of New Orleans. Wednesday's doubleheader is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. CT.
