Third-Ranked Rams Sweep Talladega College on Friday; Improves to 37-1 on the Season

Mobile Cruises Past Tornadoes in Weekend Road Trip to Talladega

TALLADEGA, Ala. - After seeing a doubleheader against Faulkner University in Montgomery, Ala. postponed due to weather and field conditions on Thursday, the University of Mobile Softball team played a conference doubleheader in Talladega, Ala. on Friday, Apr. 15 against the Talladega College Tornadoes. The third-ranked Rams managed to cruise past the Tornadoes, earning a 16-0 run-rule victory in game one of the afternoon doubleheader, and followed with an 8-3 win in the second game. The two wins improve Mobile's overall record to 37-1 on the season and 18-1 in SSAC action.


Game One Recap - Mobile 16, Talladega 0 (6 Innings)

In game one on Friday afternoon, Mobile's offense dominated, scoring six runs across the first two innings and 16 runs total across six innings. Mobile's big inning came in the top of the sixth where the Rams scored nine runs in the inning alone and eventually earned the run-rule victory. Katie Head had a career day at the plate, smashing a total of three home runs in the win, while driving in six runs for Mobile, both career-highs in a single game. Head finished 3-for-4 at the plate.

Madilyn Sheffield and Caitlin McRee each recorded three RBIs in game one as Sheffield finished 2-for-4 and McRee finished 1-for-3 at the dish. McRee was awarded the start at second base. Designated player Ashlyn Stewart finished 1-for-3 and drove in two in game one, and a total of six Rams recorded at least one RBI in the victory.

The pitching was solid for Mobile in game one as well as Brinkley Goff was awarded the start and pitched just one inning. Sydnee Fitzgerald pitched the remaining five innings, holding the Torndoes scoreless and earning the win from the pitcher's circle in game one.


Game Two Recap - Mobile 8, Talladega 3

Later that afternoon, the Rams picked up right where they left off in game two, scoring seven runs in the first three innings. Caitlin McRee once again finished three RBIs in the victory, two coming off a two-run homer in the second inning. McRee finished with six RBIs across both games against Talladega.

Ashlyn Stewart drove in two off an opposite field single early in the game, as Courtney Ellzey and Katie Head both finished with one RBI each. Head led all Rams on Friday with seven runs-batted-in, bringing her season total to 25 in 23 games played. 

In the circle, Avery Johnston was awarded the start and pitched a complete game. Johnston's complete game is her third this season as she improves to 6-1 this season. In game two, Johnston allowed three runs off three hits, while striking out six. Johnston walked four in the win. 


Six Home Games Remaining

Following Mobile's doubleheader sweep on the road on Friday, the Rams are set for a long home stand this upcoming week to wrap up the 2022 regular season. The Rams will play six-straight games at home to conclude the regular season and are set to face No. 7 William Carey for a very important doubleheader at 4:00 p.m. CT on Tuesday, Apr. 19 to begin the week.
