MOBILE, Ala. - On a hot Saturday afternoon in front of a packed crowd at the Jungle, the University of Mobile Women's Soccer team hosted Talladega College to begin conference play and dominated the Tornadoes from start to finish, winning the match, 12-0. Temperatures reached north of 90 degrees on Saturday, excluding humidity, and saw several players on Talladega's side have cramping issues. Talladega only traveled with 11 active players on the roster, meaning no substitutions for the Tornadoes during the blowout loss to Mobile.
Mobile has now scored a total of 20 goals in their last two matches played as the win for the Rams on Saturday advances the overall record to 5-2-2, with a conference record sitting at 1-0-0.
Mobile Scores 10 in the First 45 Minutes; 12 Overall
Mobile controlled the match from the very first whistle on Saturday afternoon, eventually hitting the scoreboard in the fourth minute following a strike from the center of the field outside of the box by Ashlyn Broussard. Broussard's goal was the first of the season for the third-year freshman.
Nine minutes later, Olivia Quiroz notched her fifth goal of the season following a near perfect pass across the field by Emily Silbernagel. Silbernagel's assist is the first on the year for the sophomore defender. Quiroz went on to score her second goal of the match just five minutes later, her sixth on the year, to put the Rams up, 3-0. The true freshman from Mandeville, La. is second on the team in goals scored this year with six, trailing Sophie Roberts who entered Saturday with nine.
Two minutes after Quiroz's second goal, Mia Mugford recorded her second goal of the season following a pass from Carolina Martins Gomes, who was credited with the assist. Freshman Raegan Latiolais followed with her fourth goal of the season, her fourth in the last two matches played, in the 25th minute. Two minutes later, Madison Hager put the Rams up 6-0 following a penalty kick opportunity.
Talladega then added to the goals total in the 30th minute of the first half, committing an own goal to extend the Rams' lead to seven. After a big lead for Mobile, head coach Brian Person emptied his bench and gave several reserves opportunity to play. Sophie Roberts managed to score her 10th goal of the season from off the bench, her 10th goal in six matches played to continue to lead Mobile in offense. Roberts' goal came in the 37th minute. Emily Silbernagel then added a goal in the 40th minute, her first on the year. In the dominant first half, Silbernagel recorded her first goal and assist on the season.
Right before halftime, Ashlyn Broussard joined Olivia Quiroz as the only two players to score multiple goals in Saturday's victory, scoring her second in the 44th minute. Mobile went to the break with a 10-0 lead.
In the second half, the Rams only scored twice, one coming off the foot of Carolina Martins Gomes, her fifth of the season, and the other goal being Talladega's second own goal mistake in the 79th minute.
Overall, Mobile took a total of 34 shots, with 23 shots being on-goal. Talladega rarely crossed midfield against the Rams defense and did not take a shot in the defeat.
