MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The University of Mobile Men's Soccer team traveled to Montgomery, Ala. on Sunday, Sept. 4 for an evening match against Auburn University of Montgomery, a NCAA Division II team, and came away with a 3-1 victory after scoring two late goals. The two teams are currently ranked within the top 10 nationally in their divisions ahead of Sunday's match, with Mobile sitting at No. 2 in the NAIA and AUM starting the year ranked No. 8 in the NCAA D-II.
Additionally, the two teams met just one season ago at the Jungle in Mobile, Ala., which saw Mobile come away with an overtime victory over the Warhawks. Because last year's match was an exhibition match for the Rams, the win did not count on the regular season record. However, AUM's loss to the Rams did reflect on their regular season record as it was classified as a regular season match. On Sunday, the match counted for both teams as Mobile seems to have AUM's number with yet another victory.
How It Happened
After a scoreless first 25 minutes, it was Mobile who hit the scoreboard first in the 28th minute. Defender Baptiste Gateau notched his first goal of the season to put the Rams ahead, 1-0. The 1-0 lead is where the scoring stood through halftime as the Rams looked to add insurance goals in the final 45 minutes.
The Warhawks were able to tie the match at one goal a piece, however, in the 59th minute following a header by Joel Ibanez. From there, both teams traded possession throughout the second half until Henrique Luro of Mobile scored the go-ahead goal late in 84th minute following a dead-ball pass from Angel Almiron. Almiron was awarded the assist and Luro's goal was his first as a Ram. Just four minutes later, the Rams connected with an insurance goal after a left-foot shot by Jose Sanabria zoomed past the AUM goalkeeper. The Rams went on to win the match over the Warhawks, 3-1.
The Rams saw three players connect with their first goals of the season on Sunday as Archie Bean was awarded his first start of the season in the net. Bean recorded one save against AUM for the victory.
Mobile managed to out-shoot AUM 8-6 in the win, with half of the Rams' shots being on-goal. The Warhawks took a total of five corner kicks, while Mobile recorded just one less at four. The victory for the Rams is the third-straight as the overall record for Mobile moves to 3-0-1 on the young 2022 season.
12-Day Break for Mobile
Mobile will see a 12-day break in the schedule before the next scheduled match. The Rams will travel to Thomasville, Ga. for a non-conference matchup against Thomas University on Sept. 16. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. CT as Mobile will look to win their fourth-straight match.
