MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The University of Mobile Women's Basketball team saw the 2022-23 season conclude on Thursday morning, Feb. 23, falling to conference rival William Carey University 63-56 in the quarterfinals of the SSAC Women's Basketball Championship Tournament. Entering the postseason, Mobile earned the five-seed of the conference tourney with a 9-9 conference record, while the Crusaders of William Carey earned the No. 4 seed with a 11-7 SSAC record. Thursday's game was the first of four games scheduled to be played today in the women's bracket.
Quarterfinal Recap - Mobile 56, William Carey 63
Mobile's six-point loss ends the Rams' 2022-23 campaign with a 13-16 overall record, dropping four of the last five games played on the year. The Rams led at the half in Thursday's quarterfinal game, but allowed a William Carey comeback in the second half to eventually be eliminated from the tournament. Mobile finished 1-2 against William Carey this season.
At the half, Mobile had the edge 34-29, scoring 22 points alone in the second quarter with a 6-for-13 shooting line. However, the second quarter proved to be the only consistent offensive quarter for the Rams as Mobile tallied just 16 made shots in the game, good for a 27% shooting percentage as a unit. Meanwhile, the Crusaders finished by shooting 44% in the game, shooting above 50% in the final two quarters. 40 of William Carey's 63 points came from the paint on Thursday.
Individually, MacKenzie White led the Rams with 13 points, securing four rebounds and a team-high six assists in the process. Erica Jones and Miya Kimber followed White's performance with 10 points each in the loss, with Kimber leading the team with two steals and Jones leading Mobile with eight rebounds, two shy of a double-double. Jones was selected as Mobile's lone all-conference player this year at the awards banquet on Wednesday night, Feb. 22.
Claire Worth tallied nine points in the defeat, knocking down three of Mobile's six made three-pointers on Thursday. From the free throw line, the Rams shot well by tallying 18 made free throws on 23 attempts. The Rams were eventually out-rebounded by the Crusaders, 40-37.
2022-23 Season Review
Through 29 games played on the 2022-23 season, Mobile finished 13-16 overall and averaged 59.7 points per game. The Rams shot 38% from the floor this season and averaged just over 38 rebounds per contest. Erica Jones led Mobile as the only player with a double-digit points per game total with 12.9 ppg. MacKenzie White finished by avergaing 9.9 ppg on the year.
For head coach Erika Stuckman, the fifth-year head coach improved her overall record with Mobile to 70-64 all time at UM, while the all-time program record for UM Women's Basketball moves to 624-440.
