UM SOFTBALL FIELD, MOBILE, Ala. - Coming off a doubleheader sweep at home over Brewton-Parker College where the University of Mobile Softball team shut out the Barons in both games played, it was Mobile who was on the receiving end of two shutout losses on Sunday, Mar. 19 as the top-ranked Rams were upset at home in a doubleheader against No. 22 Middle Georgia State.
The Knights of Middle Georgia State came away with a 6-0 victory in game one, while riding a wave of confidence going into the second game where Middle Georgia State managed a 1-0 win. The two wins for the Knights extends the current win streak to 15-straight victories, improving the program's overall record to 20-2 overall. Meanwhile, the two losses for No. 1 Mobile drops the overall record to 19-6 this season, with the conference record falling to 6-2.
Middle Georgia State Makes Statement
In game one on Sunday afternoon, Middle Georgia State came out with an impressive 6-0 win, pushing across five runs from innings four through six. The Knights outhit the Rams 7-4 in Sunday's first game, with Mobile leaving all four runners on base. Katie Head, senior right fielder for Mobile, finished 2-for-2 at the plate, but was left stranded after both at-bats. Ashlyn Stewart finished 1-for-2 at the dish, while Lilly Locke ended game one with a 1-for-1 line. Locke was one of several replacements late in the game made by head coach Alison Sellers-Cook.
In the second game of the afternoon, Middle Georgia State pushed across the game's lone run in the top of the fourth inning. Mobile starting pitcher Brinkley Goff pitched well in a complete game effort, allowing just four hits, but did not receive any run support and suffered the defeat in the pitcher's circle. She finished with four strikeouts.
Mobile's offense only mustered three hits against the Knights in game two, once again leaving all three runners on base. Middle Georgia State's starting pitcher Madisyn Riggins pitched a two-hitter through six innings before allowing a seventh-inning single by Madilyn Sheffield. Sheffield finished game two with a 1-for-2 line, adding a walk. Mobile's other two hits came from the top of the order as Kristen Black and Caitlin McRee each tallied a hit in the loss.
Mobile Looking For Bounce Back
After suffering two shutout losses on Sunday, Mobile will look to answer back with authority as the Rams host Crowley's Ridge College for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon, Mar. 22. Game one on Wednesday is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. CT at the UM Softball Field.
The next NAIA Softball Top 25 rankings will be released on Wednesday, with Mobile likely to fall from the No. 1 ranking.
