GERALD WALLACE TENNIS CENTER, MOBILE, Ala. - The 12th-ranked University of Mobile Women's Tennis team dropped just their third match of the 2023 season on Wednesday afternoon, Apr. 5, falling to conference rival William Carey, 5-2. William Carey entered Wednesday ranked five spots worse than the Rams in the latest NAIA Women's Tennis Top 25 Coaches' Poll, but managed a victory on Mobile's home court to hand the Rams their second conference loss of the season. Overall, Mobile's record falls to 7-3 on the year with the SSAC record now sitting at 4-2.
Mobile Unable to Top Rival
In Wednesday's match, the Rams started the afternoon with a 6-1 win from the top-seeded doubles match against William Carey's top pair. Maria Jose Reynaldo Toledo and Eva Garcia teamed up for the doubles victory from the first flight, but the Crusaders managed to answer with two 6-3 victories across No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to secure the overall doubles point.
In singles action, Garcia and freshman Berta Castello were the lone two Rams to grab wins in singles play, with William Carey earning victories across the first, third, fourth, and sixth flights to earn the match victory. Castello came away with a 6-2, 7-5 win from No. 2 singles, while Garcia cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win from the fifth flight. Two of Mobile's singles losses came in three sets as Reynaldo Toledo fell from the top-seeded singles match, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (4), 3-6. From the sixth flight, Mobile's Luana Wild fell 3-6, 6-4, 2-6.
Two Matches Left Ahead of Conference Tournament
Wednesday's match was Mobile's final conference match of the regular season as the Rams are set face two non-conference opponents next to conclude the regular season schedule. Mobile will host Rust College this Saturday, Apr. 8 for a 12:00 p.m. CT start time, and will wrap up the schedule with a crosstown rivalry match against Spring Hill on Thursday, Apr. 13.
