WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - The University of Mobile Baseball team saw the 2023 season come to an end on Wednesday, May 17, falling to Reinhardt University in an elimination game in the Williamsburg Bracket of the NAIA Baseball Opening Round. Mobile had a rough go of things in this year's opening round tournament, entering as the No. 2 seed but dropping both games played in the double-elimination tourney.
The fourth-seeded Eagles of Reinhardt managed an upset over the Rams on Wednesday, coming away with a 5-2 victory. With Mobile's loss, the Rams end the 2023 season with a 35-15 overall record, racking up 10 more wins than last year's total.
Wednesday Opening Round Recap
The day began with Reinhardt hitting the scoreboard early with a two-run first inning, and eventually scoring add-on runs in the sixth and seventh innings to grab a five-run lead. Mobile's offense was kept relatively quiet through the first eight innings of the ballgame, recording seven hits and being held scoreless. Finally in the top of the ninth, the Rams began a comeback after Samuel Plash led off the inning with a solo home run to left center field. Plash's ninth-inning homer is his seventh of the year.
Two batters later, shortstop Sam Bowman connected with a solo shot to right field to cut the Reinhardt lead to just three runs. After back-to-back walks to Sean Mason and Trey Watson, Mobile's top of the order came up to the plate representing the tying run with only one out. However, Mobile's comeback fell short as Tucker Musgrove flew out to right field and Landon Moore was caught looking at strike three to give Reinhardt the win, eliminating the Rams from the opening round tournament.
Both teams finished with nine hits each on Wednesday, with Samuel Plash finishing 3-for-4. Landon Moore and Sam Bowman each notched two hits in the losing effort, while Sean Mason and Trey Watson recording one hit and one walk each. On the mound, Mobile used three pitchers, with starter Tyler Cruse tossing six innings and allowing three runs.
Looking to Build on Successful Season
With Mobile's season over, the Rams, led by head coach Jon Seymour, now looks ahead to the offseason and eventually the 2024 season. Mobile's 2023 season was nothing short of a success as the Rams earned the program's first SSAC Baseball Championship trophy, saw several records broken, and earned a bid to the NAIA Baseball National Championship Tournament for the first time since 2017.
