HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The University of Mobile Baseball team opened play in the 2023 SSAC Baseball Championship Tournament on Wednesday, May 3, defeating the sixth-seeded Faulkner Eagles 4-2 in the process. Prior to the start of this year's conference tournament, Mobile earned the No. 3 seed and advanced to the winner's bracket of the double-elimination tournament where the Rams will face the No. 2 seed of Talladega College on Thursday afternoon, May 4.
How It Happened
Wednesday's game opened with two scoreless innings between the Rams and Eagles, with Mobile hitting the scoreboard first in the bottom of the third inning with two runs. Samuel Plash drove in Sam Bowman with a double down the left field line to put the Rams on the board, and was followed by a sacrifice fly from J.T. Lastorka to put Mobile up by two through three innings. The Rams then added one run across both the fourth and fifth innings to take a 4-0 lead halfway through the ballgame. Landon Moore was responsible for Mobile's third run with a single to right field in the fourth, while a Faulkner error in the fifth allowed Mobile's fourth run to score.
The Eagles finally broke through on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning, scoring two runs to cut the deficit in half. However, the Mobile pitching staff shut down the rally over the last three innings as Mobile walked away with the win.
Inside the Box Score
Mobile starting pitcher Kyle White earned the victory on the mound, allowing five hits in six innings of work and tallying five strikeouts. After White departed the game, Mobile's bullpen pitched three scoreless innings to close out the game, with Landon Moore working two scoreless frames. Tucker Musgrove pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his ninth save of the season.
Despite being outhit by Faulkner 9-7, the Rams managed to earn the victory and were led by Sam Bowman at the plate who notched two hits and a stolen base. Landon Moore finished 1-for-2 with two walks, and Trevor Wells tallied three walks in the game. Overall, Mobile worked seven base-on-balls in Wednesday's victory.
