WEST POINT, Ga. - In the first-ever conference match between the University of Mobile Men's Soccer team and Point University (Ga.), it was Mobile who came away victorious, earning a 4-0 shutout win on Thursday night, Sept. 14. Point University, one of the SSAC's three newest conference members, was dealt with a tough task to begin SSAC action, hosting the ninth-ranked Rams of Mobile. The Skyhawks managed to hang with Mobile early, but saw the match get away as Mobile eventually proved to be too talented.
The Rams' overall record moves to 2-2-1 through five matches played this season.
Match Recap: Shutout for Mobile to Open Conference
After a scoreless first 30 minutes of the match on Thursday, the Rams saw defender Henrique Luro Mendes notch his first goal of the season to give Mobile a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute. Mendes' goal was assisted by Ivan Jolivet and eventually became the lone goal of the first half for either team.
In the second half, the Rams took a 2-0 lead following Mobile newcomer Jman Dieng's first goal as a Ram. Dieng's goal came in the 58th minute, with Zacharia Hasler earning the assist. From there, pressure was on Point to get on the scoreboard as the Rams began threatening to run away with the match. However, Point was unable to mount anything against Mobile, and the Rams' offensive attack only picked up.
Dani Leone, another Mobile newcomer, notched his first goal in cardinal red, giving the Rams a 3-0 lead in the 78th minute. Ivan Jolivet picked up his second assist on Thursday following Leone's goal. Just under two minutes later, Ty Ferguson netted his first goal of the season to put Mobile up four. From there, the score held as Mobile walked away with a 4-0 victory.
In the box score, the Rams out-shot the Skyhawks 17-6, recording 12 shots-on-goal and allowing just two of Point's six shots in the final 45 minutes. Individually, five Rams recorded two shots each in the victory, while senior goalkeeper Ty Turner earned the shutout win. Turner finished the match with four saves in the clean sheet performance.
