THE JUNGLE SOCCER COMPLEX | MOBILE, Ala. - The University of Mobile Women's Soccer team hosted the University of Tennessee Southern on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 23, with the Firehawks entering as the No. 5 ranked team in the NAIA. The Rams of Mobile looked for an upset over one of the SSAC's newest members, but fell short with a 4-0 defeat. The loss is Mobile's first since Sept. 9 and snaps a 2-0-1 run the Rams have put together since the conference portion of the schedule began. In addition, Saturday's loss drops Mobile's overall record this season to 5-3-2, while moving the team to a 2-1-1 in SSAC record.
Match Recap: Mobile Blanked at Home
Despite hosting the fifth-ranked team in the nation, Mobile stayed in the match throughout the first half on Saturday, allowing just one UT-Southern goal in the 18th minute. The Firehawks took a whopping 24 shots in the first half, but Mobile goalkeeper Juliana Gomez continued her strong campaign with 11 impressive saves in the half alone. Mobile and UT-Southern went to the break with the Rams trailing by just one score.
In the second half, UT-Southern's offense picked up and the Firehawks pushed across three goals. All three goals were scored between the 50th and 71st minutes as UT-Southern added 16 more shots in the latter part of the match. For the Rams, Mobile could only muster 11 shots total on Saturday, with five being on goal. However, all five shots on target for Mobile were eventually saved. The match ended with UT-Southern earning the 4-0 win.
Overall, UT-Southern took 40 shots as Juliana Gomez ended the afternoon with a career-high 14 saves. Raegan Latiolais led the Rams with three shots as her four-match scoring streak ended against the Firehawks. Andi Hughes was the only other Ram to record multiple shots against UT-Southern, ending the day with two shots taken.
Back to the State of Georgia
Following the loss to the Firehawks, Mobile is scheduled to return to Georgia this upcoming week for a matchup against Brewton-Parker College (Ga.) on Thursday, Sept. 28. Thursday's match in Mount Vernon, Ga. is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. CT start.
