AUSTILL PHARR GYMNASIUM | MOBILE, Ala. - The University of Mobile Volleyball team returned home to Pharr Gymnasium for two conference matches across Friday and Saturday, Sept. 29-30, hosting Life University (Ga.) on Friday night and Point University (Ga.) on Saturday afternoon. Mobile opened the weekend suffering a four-set loss to Life on Friday, but bounced back nicely with an impressive four-set winner over the Skyhawks of Point the next afternoon.
Overall, Mobile moves the 2023 record to 11-6 following the 1-1 weekend, while the conference record improves to 4-3 this season.
Friday Match Recap: Life 3, Mobile 1
Mobile opened the match on Friday night in front of a large home crowd with a 25-20 set one victory. Looking to rebound from the set one defeat, the Running Eagles of Life halted any momentum that Mobile put together and came away with a 25-14 set two win. It was much of the same across sets three and four as Life tallied 25-21 and 25-18 set wins to win the match in four over the Rams.
Life recorded an attack percentage over .200 against Mobile on Friday, recording 143 total attacks in the process. Meanwhile, Mobile only mustered a .115 hitting line on 130 attack attempts, finishing with 34 team kills and 19 errors. Individually, Jordan Wood and Corrina Porch-Maxey recorded eight kills each to lead the Mobile offense in the loss, with Wood leading the team with a .471 hitting percentage. Tatum Beech led the Rams with 21 assists on Mobile's 34 kills.
On the defensive side, the Rams came away with 16 blocks and 54 defensive digs, led by sophomore libero Lexi Gillette with 16 digs. Gillette was the lone Ram on Friday to record double-digit dig totals, while Wood and Aleah Kennedy led the Rams' front with four blocks each.
Saturday Match Recap: Mobile 3, Point 1
Mobile bounced back nicely the following afternoon, defeating Point in four sets. The Rams opened the match with a 25-19 victory across the first set, following that with a 25-20 set two win. Looking for a sweep, the Skyhawks of Point rallied late in set three and came away with a 32-30 set three win to keep the match rolling. Point continued to roll early in set four, but a run by the Rams cooled off the Skyhawks as Mobile eventually won set four 25-21 to seal the match.
The offense for Mobile on Saturday was led by Kendel Lee Frazer and Corrina Porch-Maxey as both players tallied a match-high 16 kills each. For Frazer, the junior Fairhope, Ala. native matched a career-high with her 16 kills, while adding a .308 hitting line. Porch-Maxey hit .189 in the victory and led the Rams with four service aces against Point. In total, the Mobile offense hit .180 on Saturday, recording 54 kills on 161 attack attempts.
Tatum Beech led Mobile with 27 assists, followed by Jenna Schuliger who tallied a season-high 15 assists. Defensively, Mobile libero Lexi Gillette was a force on the back line as the sophomore came up with a match-high 26 digs in the win. At the net, Mobile came away with 13 total blocks.
Headed to Georgia
Following this weekend's home action in Pharr Gymnasium, Mobile is scheduled to travel to Macon, Ga. next Friday, Oct. 6 for the next match on the 2023 schedule. Mobile will face Middle Georgia State next Friday for a 5:00 p.m. CT start.
