Rams Use Goal in Final Minute to Force Draw with No. 18 Truett McConnell University

Mobile Ties Truett McConnell in Labor Day Matchup at the Jungle

THE JUNGLE SOCCER COMPLEX | MOBILE, Ala. - In what could be considered the toughest match yet on the 2023 schedule, the University of Mobile Women's Soccer team managed a 1-1 draw at home with the 18th-ranked Bears of Truett McConnell University (Ga.) on Monday afternoon, Sept. 4 after a last-minute goal evened the score. The draw is the first for Mobile on the young season and pushes the overall record to 3-1-1 through five matches played.

Match Recap: Rams Survive Bear Attack

On a warm Labor Day in Mobile, Ala., the Mobile Rams and Truett McConnell Bears squared off and saw a scoreless first half at the Jungle, with TMU taking a total of 12 shots through the first 45 minutes. Meanwhile, Mobile only mustered three shots in the first half, but kept the Bears off the scoreboard.

It was much of the same in the second half as both teams remained off the scoreboard until the final six minutes of the match. Unfortunately for Mobile, the Rams were called for a foul inside the TMU box in the 84th minute, which awarded the opposition a penalty kick. TMU's Ashley Johnson converted the PK and put the Bears ahead by one with just six minutes remaining in regulation. Looking like the match was all but over, Mobile newcomer and reserve Victoria Moseley took a shot well outside the box and placed it perfectly inside the top-right corner of the net to score the equalizer for the Rams with 54 seconds left in the match. Moseley's match-tying goal is her first on the year.

The tying goal off the cleat of Moseley did come with some controversy as center official Rainier Kelly blew the whistle just as the ball was kicked. Kelly's whistle was to award Mobile a foul call on TMU from an earlier pass near the box. However, after Kelly met with assistant referee Justin Smith, the goal stood as advantage was awarded for the Rams. From there, Mobile's goal in the final minute avoided a loss to a ranked TMU team as the match went to a 1-1 final.

Victoria Moseley played hero in the final minute, but the Rams relied heavily on the work from goalkeeper Juliana Gomez. Gomez ended the match with 10 saves, nine coming in the second half, as Truett McConnell took a total of 26 shots. The Rams only recorded seven shots in the match, with the final shot proving to be the most important. For Gomez, the second-year Ram has totaled 16 saves in five matches played this season and raised her save percentage to .842 on the year.

One More Non-Conference Match Ahead of SSAC Action

The Rams are set to return to the Jungle on Saturday night, Sept. 9 when the team hosts Louisiana Christian University at 7:00 p.m. CT. This Saturday's match is final match before conference play begins when Mobile travels to West Point, Ga. for a match against Point University (Ga.) on Sept. 14.
