AUSTILL PHARR GYMNASIUM | MOBILE, Ala. - After a strong 2-0 showing against SUN Conference opponents on the road last weekend, the University of Mobile Men's Basketball team returned home to Pharr Gymnasium and hosted NCCAA member Southeastern Baptist College (Miss.) on Tuesday evening, Nov. 12. Mobile eventually defeated the Chargers in dominating fashion, never trailing across the full 40 minutes and winning the game, 97-46 . The victory pushed Mobile to an unblemished 4-0 record to open the 2024-25 season, with the Rams set to begin conference play in the SSAC later this week. Additionally, Mobile's 4-0 start is the first under head coach Darnell Archey.
Rams on Cruise Control
Mobile established dominance early in front of the home crowd, taking a commanding 49-18 lead by halftime. At one point in the first half, Mobile managed a 30-7 run over the Chargers, finishing the first with a 63.3 team shooting percentage from the floor. Mobile's offense operated efficiently throughout the entire game, shooting a stellar 56.9% from the field with 14 players touching the court. Meanwhile, Southeastern Baptist shot just 30% in the big loss, making 18 of 60 shot attempts.
The Rams' defense was relentless, forcing turnovers and capitalizing on second-chance points, with a significant 52 points scored in the paint and 24 points off second chance opportunities. Mobile came away with eight blocks and seven steals, forcing 11 turnovers. In the rebound battle, Mobile once again dominated, out-rebounding Southeastern Baptist, 53-22.
Reigning SSAC Men's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week Ezra McKenna led the charge for Mobile with his fourth double-double of the season, contributing 20 points and 13 rebounds in just 20 minutes of playing time. Adarius Oliver also made a significant impact, scoring 16 points, including four three-pointers. Trent Moye rounded out the top scorers in the starting five with 11 points, while grabbing eight rebounds. With about 12 minutes left in the second half, head coach Darnell Archey rested his starters and turned the remainder of the game over to his bench, with the reserves producing 41 points against the Chargers. Freshman Zion Hunter put together his best game of his young collegiate career, leading the bench with a 13-point showing in 17 minutes. Jarvis Moss and Bridges Simmons also had nice nights from off the bench, with Moss tallying seven points in 13 minutes and Simmons recording six points in 14 minutes. In total, 13 of the 14 Rams to touch to floor came away with points in the 97-point performance.
Through four games on the season, Mobile averages 90 points per contest, shooting 51% from the field. Additionally, the Rams are a 78% free-throw shooting team, while averaging 43 rebounds per game.
SSAC Action Up Next
The first game of conference play is on deck for Mobile, with the Rams hosting defending SSAC Champions Loyola University (La.) on Thursday night, Nov. 14. Thursday's game is scheduled to tip off at 7:30 p.m. CT in Pharr Gymnasium.
