Rams Split Tuesday Doubleheader with Faulkner University

Mobile Works Doubleheader Split Tuesday Evening in Montgomery

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The University of Mobile Baseball team traveled north on I-65 to Montgomery, Ala. on Tuesday, Feb. 28 for a non-conference doubleheader against the Faulkner Eagles (Ala.), playing two seven-inning midweek games. Mobile managed to take game one 7-4 on Tuesday afternoon over Faulkner, but fell in the nightcap, 12-9.

The Rams' overall record moves to 5-7 on the season following Tuesday's results.

Game One - Mobile 7, Faulkner 4

The Rams opened Tuesday's doubleheader strong with Bryce Eddington leading off the game with a solo home run. Just a couple of batters later in the first, Sam Bowman, who recorded 10 total RBIs in Mobile's home opening series last weekend, picked up where he left off with a double down the left field line to extend the Rams' early lead.

Faulkner got a run back in the bottom of the second, but Mobile's offense produced a four-run fifth inning to take a 6-1 lead. Mobile later added an insurance run in the top of the sixth off a Cameron Brock RBI knock. The Eagles began a late rally starting with one run in the fifth before pushing across two more runs in the seventh and final inning. Mobile starting pitcher Stephen Poche' was eventually pulled in the seventh for newcomer Nate Anderson, who struck out the lone batter he faced to end the game and record the save. Poche' improves to 1-0 on the mound this season after working 6 2/3 innings, allowing four runs.

Mobile recorded 13 hits in the win, with the top five in the starting lineup finishing 9-for-19 at the plate. Sam Mansell paced Mobile with three hits, followed by Bryce Eddington, Sam Bowman, Cameron Brock, and Landon Moore with two hits a piece.

Game Two - Faulkner 12, Mobile 9

Mobile once again opened the game with a first-inning run as J.T. Lastorka smoked a double to right center field to give the Rams an early 1-0 lead. Unlike game one, the Eagles got the bats working early, taking a 3-1 lead after three innings. Faulkner later added insurance runs in the middle innings, recording a five-run fifth before adding four more runs in the sixth. Mobile managed just their second run in the top of the sixth following a sacrifice fly from Sam Bowman.

Entering the final inning, Mobile then rallied for seven runs in the seventh to narrow the lead to 12-9. Mobile relied on four RBI singles and a two-run double by Colton Wood to cut the deficit to just three runs. Unfortunately for the Rams, Mobile's rally was cut short as Faulkner recorded the game's last out and earned the victory, 12-9.

Both teams recorded 13 hits each in game two, with Mobile once again led by Sam Mansell with a 3-for-5 batting line at the dish. Sam Bowman finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, while freshman Colton Wood collected two RBIs of his own off a 2-for-3 line.

I-65 Series Continues Next Week

Mobile will meet Faulkner again next on the schedule, hosting a midweek doubleheader next Tuesday, Mar. 5 at Jacobs Field. Next week's doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. CT, with both games being tabbed as non-conference games.
