Baseball Sweeps Brewton-Parker in Offense-Heavy Road Series

Rams Score 39 Total Runs in Three-Game Rout Over Barons

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. - The University of Mobile Baseball team wrapped up a three-game road series with Brewton-Parker College (Ga.) on Friday afternoon, Mar. 15 in Mount Vernon, Ga., sweeping the Barons across all three games played in the process. The series sweep for Mobile comes after the Rams were swept in three games by Blue Mountain Christian (Miss.) just the weekend before at Jacobs Field. The Rams responded with strong offensive numbers at Brewton-Parker, totaling double-digit run and hit totals in each win.

Mobile improves the overall record on the season to 8-10, while advancing the SSAC record to 7-5 this year. Brewton-Parker falls below .500 on the season to 14-15 after dropping each game to the Rams.

Series Highlights

Game One [Box Score]: In game one of a doubleheader to begin the three-game set, Mobile scored three runs each across the first and second innings to set the tone of the series. Later in the fourth inning, Mobile went up 10-0 on the Barons after a four-run top of the fourth. The two teams then traded several runs over the next two innings, with Mobile eventually taking a 12-6 lead to the seventh and final inning of the afternoon's first game. The Barons managed to push across three runs in the bottom of the seventh to start a rally, but Mobile was able to hold on to the lead and win the game, 12-9.

The Rams produced 16 hits to open the series against Brewton-Parker, with Bryce Eddington finishing 3-for-5 at the plate with two home runs in the victory. Eddington currently leads Mobile with seven homers during the 2024 season. Peyton Bell joined Eddington in recording a home run in game one, collecting his first of the year, and tallied three hits. Cameron Brock led the offense with a 4-for-5 batting line, tallying three runs driven in, and Alex McWhorter finished 2-for-4 at the dish with a pair of RBIs.

On the mound, Tyler Cruse was credited with the win, tossing 4 2/3 innings and striking out five. Jacob Davis then closed out the game in a non-save situation with 2 1/3 innings of work, allowing just three hits.

Game Two [Box Score]: In the nightcap during Thursday's doubleheader, the Mobile offense picked up where it left off in game one and pushed across seven runs in the first inning alone. Peyton Bell highlighted the inning with two RBI knocks as Mobile batted around against the Brewton-Parker pitching staff. After the Barons scored two runs in the bottom half of the first, Mobile added three more runs in the second to take an early 10-3 lead.

Brewton-Parker then cut into the lead some in the bottom of the fourth with four runs, but the Mobile offense continued to add runs throughout the middle innings. Going into the eighth inning, the Rams led 14-8 and added two more runs in the top of the eighth. The Barons responded once more with three runs in the bottom half, but Mobile's offensive explosion proved to be too much in the end as the Rams earned a 16-11 victory for the doubleheader sweep.

Peyton Bell led the charge and collected four hits in the win, driving in three RBIs. Sam Bowman and Cameron Brock joined Bell with three RBIs each in the big win as Mobile saw seven total Rams record at least one RBI in the nightcap. Trey Watson got the nod on the mound and pitched six innings, allowing just two earned runs, while striking out five batters.

Game Three [Box Score]: On Friday afternoon to close out the series, it was Brewton-Parker who hit the scoreboard first with a three-run first inning. However, Mobile starting pitcher Ethan McPherson settled in nicely after the rough first and tossed five shutout innings against the Barons' lineup. The three runs in the bottom of the first eventually became the only runs allowed for McPherson.

Meanwhile, Mobile's offense hit the scoreboard in the third inning with two runs, later adding another run in the fifth to tie the game, 3-3. From there, Brewton-Parker struggled against the Mobile bats as the Rams scored in every inning to close out the game. Eventually, Mobile won 11-6, with the Barons rallying for two runs in the bottom of the ninth. Stephen Poche' relieved McPherson on the mound and closed out the game with three innings of work, collecting the save.

At the plate, Sam Bowman highlighted the afternoon on Friday, recording a cycle against Brewton-Parker. The starting shortstop went 5-for-6 at the plate in the series finale, hitting a two-run homer in the third inning. He later cleared the bases with a triple to right center field in the sixth inning. Bowman's first of two singles came during the top of the first inning, while his double led off the top of the eighth inning and established his cycle. He finished the finale with a game-high five RBIs.

Bryce Eddington, J.T. Lastorka, Cameron Brock joined Bowman in strong offensive performances, with both Eddington and Lastorka recording three hits each. Eddington drove in one, while Lastorka and Cameron Brock finished with a pair of RBIs each. Brock tallied a 1-for-3 batting line in the win.

In total, Mobile recorded 47 total hits in the series against Brewton-Parker, scoring 39 total runs as a team.
