GERALD WALLACE TENNIS CENTER | MOBILE, Ala. - The University of Mobile Women's Tennis team managed to get back into the win column after two-straight conference losses on Wednesday afternoon, Mar. 6, using a comeback to defeat Bethel University (Tenn.) 4-3 at home. Mobile improves to 6-3 following the Wednesday victory, earning three-straight points to win the match.
Sweet Caroline for the Rams
In doubles play to start the match, Mobile dropped two of the three doubles matches to hand the first point of the afternoon to Bethel. The Wildcats came up with a 6-2 win from the top-seeded doubles match, while adding a 6-1 victory in the third flight of doubles play. No. 2 doubles was left unfinished as Bethel already claimed the point.
In singles action, Bethel continued to build momentum by earning wins from the second and third seeds of the starting lineup. Meanwhile, Mobile's Luana Wild scored the Rams' first point of the match with a strong 6-2, 6-4 win from No. 4 singles. Up 3-1, Bethel needed to just one win in singles play to clinch the match and earn a strong win on the road over Mobile.
The Rams did not go down without a fight, however, as Rachel McMullan made the score 3-2 following a 6-4, 6-3 win from the sixth flight of the lineup. Shortly after, Karolina Mrowiecova came up with a three-set win from No. 1 singles to tie the match, 3-3. The overall match result eventually came down to the fifth-seeded singles match, with freshman Caroline Johnson being the decider.
Johnson fought out a 7-5 set one win from No. 5 singles, but later fell in tiebreaker fashion 7-6 (6) across the second set. With just one set to decide the match, Johnson built momentum and cruised to a 6-2 win in the third set, eventually clinching the match win for Mobile. Following the win and on-court celebration, both the men's and women's teams at Mobile celebrated in the locker room together with the song "Sweet Caroline" blaring across the Gerald Wallace Tennis Center.
The win was much needed for the women's tennis team at UM as Bethel is currently receiving votes for the NAIA Women's Tennis Top 25. Additionally, the win is Mobile's first since Feb. 28.
