Baseball Back to .500 Following Weekend Sweep at Point University

Rams Sweep Skyhawks in Three Games Over the Weekend

WEST POINT, Ga. - The University of Mobile Baseball team picked up the team's second consecutive road sweep over the weekend, sweeping Point University (Ga.) across three games played in West Point, Ga. The series began with a doubleheader on Friday evening, Mar. 29, ending with the series finale on Saturday afternoon, Mar. 30.

Mobile's last road trip to the state of Georgia a couple of weeks back also resulted in a three-game sweep, with the Rams defeating Brewton-Parker College (Ga.) in all three games played. The Rams are 8-3 on the road during the 2024 campaign, while advancing the overall record back to .500 at 12-12 on the season. Additionally, Mobile sits fourth in the current SSAC Baseball standings with an 11-7 conference record.

Weekend Notables

Game One [Box Score]: In game one to kick off the weekend, Mobile shut out the Skyhawks, 4-0. Tyler Cruse cruised on the mound for the Rams, tossing a complete game shutout in the seven-inning game, while picking up three strikeouts. Cruise allowed just three hits and three base on balls in the victory.

At the plate, Mobile hit the scoreboard in the top of the first inning off an RBI double by J.T. Lastorka. Lastorka finished 1-for-3 with a walk, while Sam Bowman finished with a 2-for-3 line at the dish, being the only Ram to record multiple hits in game one. Mobile's six through nine hitters in the lineup produced four of the team's seven hits in the four-run win.

Game Two [Box Score]: In the nightcap on Friday, Mobile worked a late comeback to earn the doubleheader sweep. The Rams trailed Point 5-3 entering the ninth inning before Mobile produced a five-run top of the ninth to steal game two, 8-5. Sam Bowman, Cameron Brock, and Alex McWhorter all tallied three hits each in the victory, with McWhorter pacing Mobile with two runs driven in. The go-ahead run scored following an RBI single by McWhorter. Mobile recorded a series-high 14 hits on the offensive side across game two.

On the mound, Trey Watson picked up eight strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings of work, with three of the four runs allowed being earned runs. Watson threw upwards of 120 pitches in the effort during the nightcap, finishing with a no-decision. Jacob Davis pitched the remainder of the game from out of the bullpen, earning the win following 2 1/3 innings of two-hit ball. Davis struck out four Skyhawks.

Game Three [Box Score]: During the series finale on Saturday, Mobile once again used a comeback to earn the win, scoring the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning. The Rams led 7-3 in the eighth before Point tied the game at seven runs a piece with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. However, Mobile's Sam Bowman recorded the go-ahead RBI following a single to center field next half inning. Mobile went on to win the series finale, 8-7.

Both Alex McWhorter and Cameron Brock homered in the victory, with McWhorter's being a solo shot in the second inning. One inning later, Brock smacked a three-run homer during the Rams' five-run third inning. Brock paced the offense with a 3-for-5 batting line, while Peyton Bell finished 2-for-4. As a team, Mobile tallied 10 hits.

Ethan McPherson gave Mobile seven innings on the hill to start the game, allowing three runs and eight hits. He struck out three. Matthew Holston closed out the game with two innings, eventually earning the win following Mobile's comeback.
