Baseball Salvages Series with No. 14 Loyola with High-Scoring Win in Weekend Finale

Rams Finish 1-2 Against Wolf Pack in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The University of Mobile Baseball team finished 1-2 on the road this weekend against the NAIA's 14th-ranked team in Loyola University (La.), dropping the first two games of the three-game series before winning a shootout in the finale.

Mobile and Loyola began the series on Friday night, Apr. 5, with the Wolf Pack earning a 13-8 win over Mobile. The following day, the two conference foes played a doubleheader, which saw both teams earn a win. Loyola clinched the series win with a 3-2 victory to begin play on Saturday, later falling to Mobile 14-12 in the series finale to wrap up the weekend. The Rams relied on a seven-run fifth and three runs in the ninth to secure the game-three win.

Mobile's overall record moves to 13-14 on the season following the three-game set with Loyola, while the conference record moves to 12-9. 

Series Notables
  • Loyola out-hit Mobile 14-12 in game one on Friday, scoring four insurance runs in the eighth inning to eventually earn the win.
  • Peyton Bell and Cameron Brock each recorded three hits on Mobile's side, with Sam Bowman leading the Rams with a pair of RBIs in the loss.
  • In game two, Mobile took a 2-0 lead to the middle innings before allowing three unanswered runs for the Wolf Pack across the fifth and sixth innings.
  • Peyton Bell's solo home run in the third inning put the Rams on the board first, with Bryce Eddington following with an RBI single in the fourth.
  • Bell and Eddington combined to finish 5-for-9 at the plate from the top two spots in the lineup.
  • Mobile's Trey Watson tossed five innings from the mound to open the game, allowing one unearned run and striking out four batters.
  • In the series finale, Mobile trailed 3-0 before scoring seven runs alone in the seventh inning.
  • Both Peyton Bell and Jackson Breal recorded two RBIs in the seven-run inning as Mobile managed seven total hits across the frame.
  • Loyola responded with five runs in the fifth to retake the lead, 8-7.
  • Across the next four innings following the fifth, the Rams offense caught fire and scored at least one run, highlighted by a three-run ninth inning.
  • Loyola managed three runs in the ninth, but the comeback fell short as Mobile salvaged the series with a two-run victory. 
  • Mobile totaled 20 hits in the win, led by Landon Moore with a 4-for-5 line at the dish.
  • Additionally, Moore earned the win on the mound after pitching 3 2/3 innings in relief.
  • Five Rams recorded two RBIs each in the series finale, with both Sam Bowman and Cameron Brock recording home runs.

Mobile v. Spring Hill Upcoming

Mobile's next game on the schedule is set for Tuesday night, Apr. 9 at home, with the Rams hosting area rival Spring Hill College (Ala.) at 7:00 p.m. CT. Tuesday's game against the Badgers is the final non-conference game of the regular season for Mobile.
