JACOBS FIELD | MOBILE, Ala. - The University of Mobile Baseball team ended the regular season portion of the 2024 schedule with a series win on Friday afternoon, Apr. 26, defeating Stillman College (Ala.) in two of three games played.
The final series of the regular season began on Thursday night, Apr. 25 at Jacobs Field, with Mobile earning an impressive 12-2 run-rule victory over the Tigers. The following day, Stillman answered back in game one of an afternoon doubleheader, defeating the Rams 6-0 in the process. The win for Stillman is the Tigers' first victory over Mobile since the 2018 season and just sixth win total in over 50 games played in history.
Finally, the series concluded with the nightcap on Friday as Mobile once again run-ruled Stillman, winning 11-1 in seven innings. The Rams end the regular season with an 18-19 overall record, while finishing the SSAC portion of the schedule with a 16-14 conference record.
Prior to Friday's doubleheader, a 2023 SSAC Baseball Championship ring ceremony was held for the 2023 UM Baseball team, while nine graduating seniors were honored with family and loved ones prior to first pitch. All nine seniors were presented with a plaque from head coach Kyle Friday before their final games played at Jacobs Field. Seniors honored were the following: Jackson Breal, Tyler Cruse, Jacob Davis, Matthew Holston, J.T. Lastorka, Sean Mason, Landon Moore, Stephen Poche', and Will Pruitt.
Series Notables
In Thursday's first game of the weekend set, Mobile managed to score seven runs across the first three innings, setting the tone of the game early. Sam Bowman led the charge at the plate a 2-for-4 line, recording a team-high three RBIs in the 10-run win. Landon Moore followed Bowman with a pair of hits and two RBIs. On the mound, Tyler Cruse was dominated with five innings of work, allowing just four hits and picking up three strikeouts. Will Pruitt and Landon Montgomery pitched the remainder of the game from out of the bullpen, combining for two hits and one run allowed. Mobile out-hit Stillman in game one 8-6, with Stillman committing four costly errors in the game.
On Friday, Stillman's Griff Minor pitched a gem to begin the doubleheader, finishing with a complete-game shutout over Mobile. The Mobile offense was held to just four hits, while Stillman racked up 10 hits for a 6-0 win. Sam Bowman and Landon Moore each picked up another hit in the series, finishing 1-for-3 at the dish, while starting pitcher Trey Watson tossed four innings, recording five strikeouts and allowing three runs.
In the series finale on Friday, the Mobile offense woke up as head coach Kyle Friday shook up the lineup. Jaron Harris was awarded the start in right field and cranked a solo home run in his first at-bat of the game to get the scoring started. One inning later, Dylan Moran produced an RBI groundout, later followed by a two-run homer off the bat of Wil King, who was given the start in left field. King's home run is his first homer as a Ram during his two-year career.
Sean Mason and Grant Driver also delievered with RBI knocks in the game, with both players recording RBI doubles halfway through the ballgame. Eventually, Mobile ended the game with 10 hits, leading to an 11-1 victory over Stillman.
Dylan Moran and Wil King led Mobile with two RBIs each in the win as seven players recorded at least one driven in during the home finale. 20 players were given a chance to play at Jacobs Field in the finale, with Ethan McPherson earning the win on the rubber after tossing five innings of one-hit ball. McPherson had a no-hitter rolling through four frames.
What's Next
Mobile will await the rest of the results in the SSAC this weekend to determine seeding in the SSAC Baseball Championship Tournament. This year's conference tournament will be held in Jackson, Tenn. on May 1-4 at the Rockabillys stadium, a former minor league stadium for the Arizona Diamondbacks AA affiliate Jackson Generals.
