Rams Swept for First Time During 2024 Season in SSAC Softball Series of the Week

14th-Ranked Rams Drop Two Games to No. 21 Middle Georgia State

UM SOFTBALL FIELD | MOBILE, Ala. - The University of Mobile Softball team was swept at home on Saturday, Apr. 6 in the SSAC Softball Series of the Week, dropping both games to No. 21 Middle Georgia State University. The sweep is Mobile's first series loss of the season, coming just one day after the 14th-ranked Rams swept Brewton-Parker College (Ga.) on Friday evening at the UM Softball Field.

Following the two losses to the Knights on Saturday, Mobile's overall record falls to 22-11 this year, while dropping out of the top spot in the current SSAC Softball standings with a 13-5 conference record.

Rams with Saturday Slumps

In game one to open Saturday's action, Mobile fell to Middle Georgia State, 3-1. The Knights managed three unanswered runs against Mobile to earn the victory after Mobile worked a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the second inning to open the scoring. Middle Georgia State tied the game 1-1 in the fifth with a bloop RBI single, adding two more runs in the sixth following an RBI single and passed ball.

The Rams had their chances in game one, eventually leaving eight runners on base. Middle Georgia State out-hit Mobile 10-8, while also leaving eight runners on. Individually, Miah Simmons, Gracie Vanderford, and Madi Robertson all collected two hits piece for Mobile, while Emily Butts pitched a complete game, allowing one earned run out of the three runs that scored. Kristen Black recorded Mobile's lone RBI with the bases-loaded walk in the second.

Game two showed similarities on Mobile's side, with the Rams eventually leaving six runners left on base in the 2-0 shutout loss. The Knights pushed across both runs in the fifth inning after Mobile's Brinkley Goff tossed four perfect innings prior. Both runs were scored off an RBI double to right center field after three-straight Knights reached base with two outs on the board.

Goff completed the game from the pitcher's circle for Mobile, striking out six batters and allowing just two hits. Meanwhile, the Mobile offense picked up five hits in the nightcap, but were unable to hit the scoreboard. In total, the Rams left 14 runners on base across Saturday's doubleheader.

On the season, the Mobile pitching staff has managed a 1.47 ERA. However, the offense is slashing just .255 as a unit with 115 runs scored in 33 games played. The .255 team average ranks outside the top 100 in the NAIA Division.

Bounce Back in Blue Mountain

Mobile is scheduled to return to action next Friday, Apr. 12 with a road doubleheader against conference foe Blue Mountain College (Miss.) in Blue Mountain, Miss. Next Friday's doubleheader is set for a 2:00 p.m. CT start.
