WILSON MORGAN SOFTBALL COMPLEX | DECATUR, Ala. - The University of Mobile Softball team opened the 2024 SSAC Softball Championship Tournament with a 2-1 walk-off win in extra innings over Brewton-Parker College (Ga.) on Thursday afternoon, May 2, advancing to day two of this year's conference tourney with a 1-0 record and a 30-14 record overall on the season.
How It Happened
Mobile entered this year's tournament as the No. 3 seed, facing the sixth-seeded Barons of Brewton-Parker to begin play. After two scoreless innings, Brewton-Parker opened the scoring with a single run in the top of the third inning following a RBI fielder's choice. With a 1-0 lead, Brewton-Parker starting pitcher Natalie O'Neal kept the Rams scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Rams tied the game in the sixth following a clutch RBI double down the right field line off the bat of Lillie Lanham, scoring Madi Robertson in the process. From there, Thursday's game went to extra innings, with Mobile relief pitcher Avery Harrell keeping the Barons scoreless in the top of the eighth inning. In the bottom half of the eighth, Mobile's Megan McCartney came through with a sacrifice fly to score the winning run to advance Mobile to Thursday with a 1-0 record.
In Mobile's 2-1 win, the Rams out-hit the Barons 5-4, but committed three errors in the game. The lone run Brewton-Parker scored was an unearned run charged to starting pitcher Emily Butts, who finished with just three innings of work from the pitchers' circle. Avery Harrell tossed five relief innings from out of the bullpen without giving up a hit and earning the win from the circle. At the plate, Butts tallied a 2-for-2 line, adding a walk, while Lillie Lanham finished 1-for-3 with the game-tying RBI in the sixth.
Friday Schedule
Mobile is set to face the second-seeded Knights of Middle Georgia State on Friday afternoon for the second game of this year's conference tournament, with first pitch being scheduled for 12:00 p.m. CT. All games of the SSAC Softball Championship Tournament with be broadcasted live HERE.
