THE JUNGLE | MOBILE, Ala. - After seeing a weather cancellation in the season opener last weekend on the road, the University of Mobile Men's Soccer team, led by 11th-year head coach Daniel Whelan, began the 2024 campaign at home on Thursday night, Aug. 23, hosting SCAD-Savannah (Ga.) in the process. Mobile, who opens this year ranked No. 10 in the NAIA Men's Soccer Preseason Coaches' Poll, managed a 3-0 shutout win over the Bees on Thursday, opening the season 1-0-0.
Mobile opened the match with six shots through the first 45 minutes, eventually hitting the scoreboard first in the 17th minute of the match. Joseph McMahon came up with Mobile's first goal of the year, leading the Rams to a 1-0 lead at halftime. Mobile held SCAD to just four shots in the half.
In the second half, McMahon picked up where he left off and notched Mobile's second score of the night in the 49th minute. The 2-0 lead forced the Bees to be more aggressive, which led to six second-half shots. However, starting goalkeeper Ty Turner kept SCAD off the scoreboard through the full 90 minutes, earning the shutout win while recording five saves. In the 85th minute, a corner kick eventually resulted in Mobile's third and final goal of the night, with deflections causing an OWN goal on SCAD.
Overall, the Rams out-shot SCAD 13-10, with seven shots being on target. McMahon paced the offense with three shots in the victory.
Saturday Morning Matchup
Coming off Thursday's win, Mobile will be back in action on Saturday morning, Aug. 24 at the Jungle, facing Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Ariz.) at 9:00 a.m. CT. Saturday's match will be broadcasted live on the University of Mobile Sports Network.
