BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. - The University of Mobile Men's Soccer team improved to 5-1-1 on the year following a 1-0 shutout victory over Blue Mountain Christian (Miss.) on Thursday evening, Sept. 19. Thursday's matchup in northeast Mississippi was the first SSAC Conference match of the year for both programs as Mobile had to fight to come out on top against the unranked Toppers.
Match Highlights
Thursday's match remained scoreless through the first 25 minutes before Mobile hit the scoreboard in the 29th minute. The lone score of the match came from striker Joseph McMahon in the 29th minute following a pass from Jeb Scarbrough, who collected the assist. McMahon continues to lead the Rams in scoring this season with his fifth goal of the year against the Toppers.
Blue Mountain, led by former Mobile Ram and MLS star Michael Azira, played well against the SSAC's top dog in Mobile, out-shooting the Rams 10-9 following the full 90 minutes. The Toppers produced four shots-on-goal, but were all saved by NAIA All-American Ty Turner for the Rams. Turner surpassed 100 career saves in net for Mobile, while earning his fifth shutout of the season.
Meanwhile, Mobile saw three shots recorded on target, with reserve Philmour Virgo pacing the team with three shots in the win. McMahon followed with two shots. The Rams took a total of six corner kicks, while holding the Toppers to just two.
Additionally, Thursday's match was a relatively clean match to begin conference action as only five fouls were called by referees, according to the official box score. Three yellow cards were issued, however, with Mobile receiving two.
SSAC Action Continues
Mobile is scheduled to return to conference play on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 21 in Pulaski, Tenn., battling the University of Tennessee Southern. UT-Southern enters with a 4-2-0 record and will bid for an upset over the ninth-ranked Rams on the home turf.
Saturday's match is slated to begin at 4:00 p.m. CT.
