RAMS PLACE 10TH OVERALL; MAGGIE COPELAND NAMED NAIA ALL-AMERICAN HONORABLE MENTION
DAVENPORT, Ia. - For the third-straight year, the University of Mobile Competitive Cheer team earned a trip to the NAIA Competitive Cheer National Championship. Last year and this year, the time earned an at-large bid for maintaining high scores throughout several regular-season competitions. The team won the conference championship in 2019 which earned Mobile an automatic bid to nationals. The 12-team, two-day championship took place on Friday and Saturday, Mar. 12-13 in Davenport, Ia.
On Friday, the day consisted of preliminary rounds where each team performed their routine. Mobile placed 11th out of the 12 teams on day one with a prelim score of 79.27. The preliminary scores count 25% of the overall score at the end of the championship competition. 2017 NAIA Competitive Cheer champions and 2018 and 2019 runner-up, the Oklahoma City Stars, placed first in prelims this year.
In the finals on Saturday, Mobile performed better and scored a final of 80.52. That score managed to jump the Rams one spot to 10th place where the team would finish. Oklahoma City went on to win the 2021 NAIA Competitive Cheer National Championship with a final score of 91.53. 2021 SSAC Competitive Cheer champions Xavier University placed fifth overall.
Following the championship competition, the NAIA announced the 2021 NAIA Competitive Cheer All-America teams with Mobile's captain Maggie Copeland (JR/Saraland, Ala) being one of 17 student-athletes earning NAIA All-American Honorable Mention status.
