Box Score PENSACOLA, Fla. - Coming off the heels of their first loss of the 2021 season, the University of Mobile Volleyball team hopped right back into the win column on Tuesday night, Sept. 21 with a straight-set sweep over the Pensacola Christian College Eagles in Pensacola. Mobile entered Tuesday's match with a 10-1 overall record, falling to crosstown rival Spring Hill College in five sets their previous matched played.
Mobile claimed the win over the Eagles of Pensacola Christian in three sets Tuesday night, 25-14, 25-18, and 25-13. The sweep marked the eighth sweep of the 2021 season for Mobile, advancing their overall season record to 11-1 while their conference record held at 2-0.
In Tuesday's match, the Rams were down two of their starters who were listed inactive for the non-conference match with Pensacola Christian. Reigning SSAC Setter of the Week Sarah Warren and Carli Rouse, who ranks second on the team in kills, did not make the trip to Pensacola for Tuesday's match. Mobile Head Coach Jon Campbell relied on youth to step in and fill the void of Warren and Rouse.
Freshman Layton Adams led Mobile with 22 assists on the night. Tatum Beech, another freshman for the Rams, tallied eight assists. The pair were responsible for 30 of Mobile's 34 assists in the win. Jordan Wood, who is in her second year with Mobile, led the team with 10 kills while recording a stellar hitting percentage of .350. Campbell's replacements for the absent Warren and Rouse made the most of opportunities in Tuesday's victory.
Defensively, it was much of the same as senior libero Melea Meadows led the Rams with 18 digs. Layton Adams was second on the team in digs with 13 while Abby Andrews recorded 12 digs and was second on the team with eight kills. Aleah Kennedy once again led Mobile with five blocking assists while Brinley Hearn recorded four. The team as a whole tallied 18 block assists in the match.
For the Rams, conference play returns this weekend as Mobile will square off against a talented Blue Mountain College team on Friday, Sept. 24 at 7:00 p.m. CT. That match will be played in Blue Mountain, Miss. The following day, Mobile will travel to Talladega, Ala. for their first match against the Talladega College Tornadoes since 2011. Talladega joined the SSAC Conference this year and Saturday's match is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. CT.
