GULF SHORES, Ala. - The University of Mobile Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field teams returned to action for the second meet on the 2021-22 season schedule on Friday, Jan. 14 in Gulf Shores, Ala where they competed against St. Norbert College in the Gulf Shores Triangular. Mobile opened up the season in the BSC Indoor Icebreaker in Birmingham, Ala. on Dec. 3 which saw Anna Cabrera of the women's track and field program qualify for the NAIA Women's Indoor Track and Field National Championship set for this upcoming Spring. On Friday, two more Rams from the women's team at Mobile joined Cabrera in qualifying for nationals.
Latavia Jack managed to qualify in not one, but two separate events during the Gulf Shores Triangular meet on Friday, breaking the indoor school record in one of the two events. Jack broke the school record and qualified in the women's 200 meters with a time of 25.24 seconds. She placed first in the event and finished over one second before the next competitor crossed the finish line. The freshman out of Lake Charles, La. also qualified in the women's 60 meters where she earned another first place finish with a time of 7.68 seconds.
Joining Jack and Cabrera at NAIA Nationals next Spring in Madison, South Dakota is Mobile newcomer Fedra Florentin. In her first meet as a Ram, the thrower recorded a new school record in the women's shot put with a 13.32 meter mark, qualifying her for nationals. Florentin's mark earned her first place in the event as she had a two meter advantage over the second place finisher from St. Norbert.
Florentin was not the only Ram to see success in the throwing category for the University of Mobile Women's Indoor Track and Field program on Friday. Tatalia Carmichael set a new personal record in the women's weight throw with a mark of 11.42 meters. Her mark placed her third in the event. Mobile's Elyssa Paulding won the same event with a 12.83 meter mark.
On the men's side in the Gulf Shores Triangular, Demarcus Dobyne set the second best throw in the men's shot put in school history on Friday. In his first year with Mobile, Dobyne placed first in the event with a mark of 13.49 meters. In addition, the sophomore placed third in the men's weight throw with a mark of 9.41 meters.
Overall, the University of Mobile Men's Indoor Track and Field team took first in 11 of 13 events in the Gulf Shores Triangular.
The Rams will be back in action in the Samford Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 22. The event is hosted by Samford University and will partake in Birmingham, Ala.
